Bulgarian Box Office Update - Weekend 4-6 May

The All-mighty conquer all
After storming the US and global box office charts, The Avengers took easily the first spot in Bulgaria as well. The result of BGN 343,140 is one of the biggest debuts ever and also marks the biggest opening for a superhero movie in the country. However, we should take into account that it features ticket sales from previews on May 1, 2 and 3, which somewhat makes the reported figure seem a little bit exaggerated. The result is slightly higher than the Transformers 3 opening figures reported last summer.

Once again the weekly comparisons are not done properly as this weekend (May 4-6) was compared to the longer previous weekend (April 24-May 1), which explains the steep drops on display.

Outside the top 10 we have the debut of Voice Over. The latest Bulgarian title is played on only seven screens, which is however no excuse for its miserable result of BGN
1,901.

The only movie which exits the top ten this weekend is Woman In Black. Though actually quite good, the underwhelming box office of BGN 32,623 is another proof that there is no room for independent horror genre films on these shores.

Compared to my projections, The Avengers came in higher (but not by that much) than my BGN 270,000 prediction, while Voice Over was thoroughly overvalued by me and my projection of BGN 7,000.

Next weekend's forecasts:

Dark Shadows - 75,000
Intouchables - 18,000 (incl. previews)
How I Spent My Summer Vacation - 23,000

(BGN 1 = USD 0.67/EUR 0.51)
