German Chart Comments - Issue Date 30.08

A seventh week for Avicii's "Wake Me Up", the definitive hit of summer 2013, on top of the singles countdown and once again a silver medal for Naughty Boy feat. Sam Smith and "La La La".

Following a slow start last week and now reflecting a complete week of sales, Katy Perry's and Lady Gaga's newest material storms the upper reaches of the chart as "Roar" moves up nine to #3 and "Applause" is up 13 places to #5. Thus, Katy Perry has her fourth top three single (and the seventh top ten one), while Lady Gaga scores her tenth top ten song in the country.

The girl power continues at #6 where Ellie Goulding advances three and registers a new peak position with her "Burn". Also on the rise is Belgian Stromae as "Papaoutai" becomes his second top ten single next to #1 "Alors on danse". The song, which has already crowned the charts of the French speaking countries, is up from #23 to #8. It's also great to see Olly Murs' "Dear Darlin'" becoming his third top ten single in Germany as it climbs six to #9.

Schlager singer Jürgen Drews, who had a couple of top ten hits in the 70s, is back in the top 20 as his newest single "Kornblumen" debuts at #15. Four years ago he had a top ten single with "Ich bau dir ein Schloss", while his "Ein Bett im Kornfeld" reached #1 in 1976.

Local project Follow Your Instinct, who had a minor hit with "My City" (peak #24) earlier this year, has teamed up with Alexandra (remember her?) Stan for "Baby, It's Ok". The team-up proves a success as the song enters this week at #17. The Romanian singer of course had a number one smash (and only chart entry so far) with "Mr. Saxobeat" in 2010.

Following a three-year absence local duo 2raumwohnung is back with a new album and the first single taken out of it called "Bei Dir bin ich schön" comes in at #29. The duo is most famous for its "36 Grad" hit, which reached #22.

At #30 Imagine Dragons are steadily on the rise with their third single "On Top Of The World", which climbs 19 positions and is currently in a desperate need of a video to become big.

Following "Am seidenen Faden", which reached #11 before a couple of months, local singer Tim Bendzko returns to the chart with a second single from his current album. "Programmiert" appears this week at #32.

Further down the top 50, we have on the rise Empire Of The Sun's "Alive", up two to #39 and Martin Garrix' "Animals", up seven to #41.

And finally, the controversial "Willst du" of hip-hop singer Alligatoah makes it this week inside the top 50 by moving 13 positions to #43. It's the first single of Alligatoah in the countdown.

The Album Chart

Following their #3 album "Sturm aufs Paradies" from 2011 German medieval metal band Saltatio Mortis score a career-best this week as "Das schwarze IXI" debuts straight at #1. Santiano are once again at #2, while Austrian rapper Nazar charts at #3 with "Fakker Lifestyle" - his most successful LP so far. Also new at #6 is the latest album of Travis called "Where You Stand".

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 23.08

As Avicii's phenomenal "Wake Me Up" makes a sixth appearance as the German number one and Naughty Boy sings his "La La La" once again at #2, it's up to Sean Paul to stir things up. His latest single "Other Side of Love" enters at #3, showing once again the star's power in Germany. The song is the third single of Sean Paul to reach #3 in the country and comes after the #31 peak of "Touch the Sky" from 2012. It is also the fifth song of the singer as a lead artist to crack the German top 10.

With the ever increasing support from their YouTube followers and three singles inside the top 50 so far, it was to be expected comedy trio Y-Titty to finally have a major hit. Thus, "Halt dein Maul" debuts this week at #5, improving on the #15 peak of "Der letzte Sommer".

Further down the top 10, John Newmann's "Love Me Again" advances one to peak at #6, while Ellie Goulding's UK number one "Burn" moves from #10 to #9.

This week also sees the return of two of the biggest female stars of the moment as Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are ready with a completely new material. A winner for now is Perry, whose "Roar" debuts at #12, turning into the tenth single of the US star to enter the top 20. As a pilot single from Katy's third album it should, however, advance towards the top ten or many would deem it a disappointment. The same is valid also for Lady Gaga's "Applause", which makes an early appearance at #18. The first single taken from Gaga's third LP becomes also her eleventh song inside the top 20. It, however, still has some way to go to at least be among the first ten positions of the countdown.

It's definitely an over-achievement to release a fourth single from a multi-selling album, which was launched last year, and to enter at #13. This is, however, just the case with "Das ist der Moment" from Die Toten Hosen. Previous single "Draußen vor der Tür" entered at #20 before plummeting outside the top 100 in just a week or two - a path, which "Das ist der Moment" will most probably follow.

Due to various factors and most notably a dubious release policy, Olly Murs has had troubles to follow "My Heart Skips a Beat" (#1) and "Troublemaker" (#2) with another major hit in Germany. This, however, now changes as the great "Dear Darling" deservingly moves up five and occupies #15. It's only the third song of Olly to enter the top 20.
Video

Belgian star Stromae has on his account the 2009 number one smash "Alors on danse" but so far has not registered another single in Germany's top 100. Now, however, his "Papaoutai" is flying high as it jumps to #23 from #41.
Video

The next new entry comes from Swedish band NoNoNo and their "Pumpin’ Blood", which enters at #30 - a first single for the newcomers.
Video

Boosted by the debut of his latest album at #1, comedian Helge Schneider's single "Sommer, Sonne, Kaktus!" rebounds this week and is up eighteen to #31.
Audio

Kings Of Leon have reached #33 with "Sex On Fire" and #9 with "Use Somebody" and have failed since then to make any considerable impact on the chart. Whether "Wait for Me" will be a new hit for the guys the next weeks will show but for now the song soars to #34 from #76.
Audio

Also on the rise is Pink's latest "True Love", which climbs four to #44. All three previous singles from Pink's current album reached the top ten, which is a target set too high for this collaboration with Lily Allen.
Video

Based on the success of "Animals", the first single of Dutch Martin Garrix in his own country, it's maybe save to presume that the song is going to be a hit in Germany as well. For now it rises 12 and lands at #48.
Video

"Radioactive" is undoubtedly one of the hits of 2013 and Imagine Dragons want to follow its success with "On Top of the World", which goes up from #67 to #49, becoming the third single of the band to enter the top 50.

So Helge Schneider makes it for the very first time at the top of the LP chart with "Sommer, Sonne, Kaktus!", while Santiano's "Mit den Gezeiten" continues to sell massively and is up three to #2. Rock band Mono Inc. bring their third album called "Nimmermehr" for a career-best at #3. Anna Netrebko's latest Verdi compilation enters new at #6.

Just outside the top 10, John Newman is on the right path as his "Love Me Again" moves eleven to #11. It's the first song of the UK newcomer to enter the top 20. At #15 Martin Solveig & The Cataracs advance 12 places with "Hey Now", which becomes the second single of the French DJ to be inside the top 20.

British sensation One Direction may have a huge teenage following but "Best Song Ever", their latest offering, becomes just the first song of the boys to enter the top 20. It debuts at #20 beating the #22 peaks of "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)" and "Live While We’re Young".

In its third week "Holy Grail" of Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake is up to #25 from #37, while Miley Cyrus climbs 14 to #30 with her global smash "We Can't Stop".

After "Army of Two" flopped a month ago, Olly Murs' follow-up, the superior "Dear Darlin", is doing considerably better as it is up to #44 from #59 in its second week. After leaving the top 50 last week "Habibi (Brand New Day)" of
Massari is back at #46, an increase from #69. Also new to the top 50 is Empire Of The Sun's "Alive" at #50, up from #58. It is the second single of the duo to enter the top 50, next to "We Are the People", which reached #1 in 2008.

The Album Chart

As Shindy is out the chart (at least for now), local power metal band Powerwolf brings its third album directly at #1. Santiano and Robin Thicke are at #2 and #3, respectively, while Selena Gomez' "Stars Dance" is new at #4. It's the first album of the US star to enter the top ten.
