German Chart Comments - Issue Date 30.05

After all the frenzy from last week has gone away, things are relatively normal inside the German singles chart with Cro's "Traum" spending a second week on top, followed once again by "Auf uns" of Andreas Bourani

New to the top three, up from #11 in its fourth week, is Calvin Harris' "Summer", which slowly but definitely turns into the biggest hit of the star in Germany.

Also doing solid business is Bakermat's "One Day (Vandaag)", which returns to the top ten by bouncing back from #16 to #4 to join the long list of electronic hits to shape the top of the German chart over the last year.

Further down the top ten, in its second week, Mark Forster's "Au Revoir" moves up two #8.

Performing well after the release of a video and the approaching of the Fifa World Cup is Pitbull's "We Are One (Ole Ola)", a collaboration with Jennifer Lopez and Cludia Leitte. The song is up 20 to #18.

The highest new entry is courtesy of Jason Derulo and Snoop Dogg at #22. "Wiggle" comes after "Trumpets" of Derulo peaked at #30 not so long ago.

"Money on My Mind" is still running strong but that did not prevent Sam Smith's follow-up "Stay With Me" to move up three to #36.

Returning to the top 50 this week we have "Marilyn Monroe" of Pharrell "Happy" Williams, which rises to #39 from #62.

It has been three years since Enrique Iglesias has had a top 50 single in Germany ("I'm a Freak" flopped at #54) but now the once big star is on the right path as "Bailando" (no relation to Loona) rises to #44 from #71.

The remaining new entries:

The Album Chart

Kollegah may have registered record sales last week but as majority of them were fan driven expectedly his album "King" falls to #4 this time around. This also happens in the face of the strong competition coming from the latest LP of Coldplay called "Ghost Stories", which becomes the fifth consecutive number one of the British band. At #2 Xavier Naidoo's "Sing Meinen Song-Das Tauschkonzert", a compilation of songs performed at the "Sing Meinen Song" contest, turns into yet another success for the German singer. Also new at #3, and registering career-best is Swedish power metal band Sabaton and "Heroes".

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 23.05

It's a record-breaking time for the German music charts this week. First, jumping to the LP chart, the success of rapper Kollegah has been hinted for quite some time but no one has expected that his fourth album will shift 160,000 copies in its first week and sets a new record for digital album sales in a week. In addition, "King" comes with the highest first week sales for the last five years.

Back to the singles chart where thanks to Kollegah and the influx of his almost entire album as separate tracks we have a mind-blowing 35 new entries inside the top 100. What is more, the recent Eurovision song contest is responsible for 13 of them.

Though Kollegah may be stealing the headlines, it is actually his colleague Cro who manages to top the singles chart with his new single "Traum". Even more, the song not only debuts directly at the summit to be the rapper's second number one but also does it with the best digital single start for the last three years. And it is the fourth fastest selling digital song in the digital era as a whole...

Thus, Andreas Bourani's former number one "Auf uns" still sticks to #2, while last week's winner - "The One" by Aneta Sablik slips to #4.

The second highest new entry belongs to Eurovision but for a change it is not the winning song but the runner-up in the shape of the Dutch entry coming from duo The Common Linnets and their "Calm After The Storm", which is new at #3. It thus also surpasses the #4 peak of Germany's own entry - Elaiza's "Is It Right" (this week up two to #8).
Video

Still, Eurovision's winning song is not far behind as the controversial "Rise Like A Phoenix" comes quite comfortably at #5. In this way Austria's Conchita Wurst marks one of the better new entries for the contest over the past few years and matches the #5 peak of last year's winner "Only Teardrops" by Emmelie de Forest. At the gala in Copenhagen on May 10 Sweden took the bronze medals and their offering "Undo" of Sanna Nielsen can be found at #32.

There are two more great new entries inside the top ten this week. At #7 Ed Sheeran is once again proving that no one could ever call him a one-hit wonder as new single - the wonderful, Pharrell Williams penned, "Sing" enters the top 100. You surely still recall that "I See Fire", Ed Sheeran's song from the Hobbit 2 soundtrack, was impressively successful in Germany, reaching #2 and standing in the top 10 for ages (it is now at #18).

Apart from a memorable appearance on Sido's "Einer dieser Steine" last year, local singer Mark Forster has never had a top 40 single to his name. Deservingly this all changes as "Au revoir", with the little help of Sido himself, enters the countdown at #10.
Video - Mark Forster

On the rise this week we can locate Rita Ora's current UK #1 "I Will Never Let You Down", up twenty to #23 in its third week in the chart, and Michael Jackson's (actually rather good) team up with Justin Timberlake "Love Never Felt So Good", up three to #25 in its second week.

"Sonnentanz", with or without added vocals, was a massive hit for Austrian electro project Klangkarussell (it reached #4 in Germany), which is finally ready with the follow-up. "Netzwerk (Falls Like Rain)" enters at #34.
Video

And before listing all Kollegah new entries plus all Eurovision-related ones, let's spare a thought for "Stay With Me", the amazing second solo single of Sam Smith, which enters the top 100 at #39. His previous one "Money On My Mind" peaked at #11.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 16.05

Traditionally, in this time of the year, the honour to crown the chart always goes to the winner of Deutschland sucht den Superstar, the casting show of one Dieter Bohlen. So, there should be no surprised as Aneta Sablik (only the third female winner in the show's relatively long history) and her winning song "The One" debut straight at #1 just a year after Beatrice Egli did the same with schlager anthem "Mein Herz". It would however be more surprising if Aneta manages to have a long-term career, which has been a task too tough for the winners of DSDS so far (with only one or two exceptions). Runner-up Meltem Acikgoez and her finale song "Explosion In My Heart" come new at #25.

Thus, last week's chart topper - "Auf uns" of Andreas Bourani has to go down a notch to #2 after only a week at the number one slot. Continuing his steady rise, George Ezra has finally made it inside the top three with "Budapest", which moves up one to #3.

The chart success of Coldplay continues unharmed as the second official single from their upcoming album "Ghost Stories" called "A Sky Full of Stars" enters at #6. It follows the #14 peak of "Magic", which is still going strong this week at #23.
Audio

Another TV-related chart story can be found at #12 as Xavier Naidoo brings his make on Andreas Gabalier's song "Amoi Seg Ma Uns Wieder" directly in the top 20. Naidoo's performance was part of a current TV show during which famous local artists sing each others songs. Thus, the episode in which the participants had to perform Gabalier's songs turned into a huge success, triggering also the interest of Germans into the Austrian star's back catalogue. On the back of this, Gabalier's own version of "Amoi Seg Ma Uns Wieder" comes new at #18, becoming his first ever top 20 single in Germany.

Inside the top 20, Alle Farben's dance anthem "She Moves" moves up eight to #13, while Kiesza's global smash "Hideaway" debuts in Germany at #16.

The interest in rapper's Kollegah singles output continues to surge with the forthcoming release of his album and three of his releases "King", "Alpha" and "Aks Im Wandschrank" can be found at #19, #20 and #21, respectively.

Following his untimely death, two new songs of Michael Jackson have appeared so far in the German top 100, with "Hold My Hand" peaking at #7. Now, M J is back with the support of Justin Timberlake as the pilot track of the "Xscape" LP called "Love Never Felt So Good" enters at #28.
Video

This week we are also witnessing "Say Something" of A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera finally managing to enter the top 40 as it soars to #36 from #93. Also on the right path is "Air Balloon" of Lily Allen, which rises thirteen to #40.

The Album Chart

Schlager duo Fantasy have their best album so far as new release "Eine Nacht im Paradies" starts directly at #1. It is followed by the new entry of "Die Leichtigkeit Des Seins" of veteran Matthias Reim at #2. Also new inside the top ten are "Shatter Me" of Lindsey Stirling at #4, matching the peak of Lindsey's debut album from last year; Rea Garvey's "Pride" at #5, a place below the #4 peak of his debut solo album "Can't Stand the Silence"; and Mando Diao's "Aelita" at #6.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 9.05

The sight of a number one sang in German is so rare this days, that it is very welcoming to see Andreas Bourani topping directly the chart with the entry of his latest single called "Auf uns". Being a million years away from his earlier output (Bourani's debut single "Nur in meinem Kopf", peak #16, has so far been his best performer), the amazing "Auf uns" reminds, at least for me, of a younger Herbert Groenemeyer, and has the honour to be the first German number one since Cro's "Whatever" from July last year.

Thus after a four-week stay at #1, Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" is down to #2, while Helene Fischer's "Atemlos durch die Nacht" moves up one to #3, showing that it does not intend to go away any time soon.

At #4, it is also up one for "Budapest" and George Ezra, while the second new entry can be found at #6. "Summer" is the latest offering of dance superstar Calvin Harris, who however has had no other top ten single in Germany so far (the Rihanna collaboration not included). The song improves on the #13 peak of "I Need Your Love" as well as on the #24 position reached by Harris' previous single "Under Control".

After persistent climbing, "One Day (Vandaag)" of Bakermat has finally made it into the top ten in its seventh week as the dance track rises three to #9.

The next new entry is courtesy of Mateo and his debut solo single called "Isso", which arrives at #12. Those who know their German acts will of course be familiar with Mateo as a member of local group Culcha Candela.

For a period of 11 chart weeks, John Legend's worldwide smash "All Of Me" couldn't go higher than the #55 position and for a moment I thought that it is destined to be one of those hits which will fade away totally unnoticed in Germany. This however changes as the great ballad soars to #19 from #61 to become Legend's first ever top 50 single in the country.

Also improving on its #23 peak from two weeks ago, "I Got U" of Duke Dumont moves up two to #22.

Apart from Calvin Harris, another established star in the face of Rita Ora also brings her best performing single in Germany with "I Will Never Let You Down". The song debuts at #32, beating the #36 peak of "R.I.P.".

Further down the chart American Authors continue their climb with "Best Day Of My Life", up 12 to #34.

As this is one of the rare weeks where all new entries are directly inside the top 50, let's deal with the rest of the bunch quickly: At #39 we have another track of rapper Kollegah, this time called "Wat Is' Denn Los Mit Dir"; Pharrell Williams follows his number one smash "Happy" with "Marilyn Monroe" at #43; Coldplay's promotional track "Midnight" arrives at #44, while Ariana Grande has her first ever chart single with "Problem", a collaboration with Iggy Azalea, at #45.

The Album Chart

For a change, it is not Helene Fischer who has the best selling album this week (she is down to #2) but German veteran Westernhagen bringing his latest LP "Alphatier" directly to the summit. It is the seventh number one in the long career of the local legend. At #6 Toto bring their "35th Anniversary Tour-Live In Poland", while Blur's singer Damon Albarn is new at #7 with "Everyday Robots" (a solo career best). Another German veteran, Joachim Witt, is not so successful as Westernhagen as his new album called "Neumond" debuts at #8, while Pixies' "Indie Cindy" arrives at #10.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 2.05

The positions one to four are once again unchanged this week as Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" spends a comfortable fourth week on top of the German singles chart. It is followed by Mr. Probz' "Waves", Pharrell Williams' "Happy" and Helene Fischer's "Atemlos durch die Nacht".

The chart marks also the first ever top ten single of George Ezra as his "Budapest" moves up seven to #5.

Swedish band Mando Diao has been absent from the German top 100 since 2010 when their MTV Unplugged version of "Down in the Past" reached #53. Now, however, they are back with the pilot single of the "Aelita" LP. "Black Saturday" arrives at #8 and has the honour to be the second top ten hit of the group next to modern classic "Dance with Somebody", which reached #2 in 2009.

Video

The profile of German rapper Kollegah has been increasing over the past few months and it is thus not strange that the third single from his current album becomes also the singer's first ever top ten hit. "King" debuts this week at #10, beating the #15 peak of "Alpha" from earlier this year.

Video

Now with finally an official video, "One day(Vandaag)" of Bakermat is destined to have even a brighter chart future and the song moves three to #12 this week.

Video

The trend of electro songs becoming huge continues as "She Moves (Far Away)" of Alle Farben feat. Graham Candy soars to #18 from #70 where it debuted a week earlier. Alle Farben, born Frans Zimmer, is a German DJ and this is his first ever chart foray.

Aloe Blacc is on his way to have a third top 20 single as "The Man" rises to #22 from #43, while "Strong" of London Grammar re-enters the top 100 at #28. Also on the rise are "All Night" of Parov Stellar, up nine to #35 and "Best Day Of My Life", the debut single of American Authors, up 15 to #46.

Following the mega success of "Hard Out Here", "Air Baloon", Lily Allen's follow-up comes more or less unnoticed at #50.

The Album Chart

Yes, Helene Fischer is once again number one with "Farbenspiel", despite the arrival of "Space Police-Defenders Of The Crown" of local power metal band Edguy at #2 and "Endlich Erwachsen" of rapper Bass Sultan Hengzt at #3 - both are career bests. Also new inside the top ten are "Konfetti" of Marcus Wiebusch, the frontman of Kettcar at #9 and "The Cautionary Tales Of Mark Oliver Everett" of US band Eels at #10.
