German Chart Comments - Issue Date 25.10

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

From one of the stranger number ones this year to the next one as French dance project Klingande rises with "Jubel" four to become the new king of the German singles chart. Even more surprisingly, "Hey Brother" of Avicii shoots itself from #10 to #2, on its way to become the second biggest hit of the Swedish musician in the country even without a video and official release. That leads us to James Blunt and his "Bonfire Heart", which slips to three from a one-week stay at #1.

Local curiosity, Milky Chance makes it this week to the top ten with "Stolen Dance" as the song goes up eleven to #7.

Further down the chart, Lorde's "Royals" enters the top 20 at #18, up from #39, while the highest new entry belongs to Depeche Mode at #19. The band continues to surprise with their fanbase in the country, so it is not strange that "Should Be Higher", the third single from their multi-selling "Delta Machine", makes it inside the top 20. It even improves on the #22 peak of previous single "Soothe My Soul".

Officially Bastille managed to have a new hit in Germany as "Things We Lost In The Fire", the follow-up to "Pompeii" (peak #6), climbs six to #20.

A position behind the UK band, the explosive combination of Pitbull and Kesha called "Timber" skyrockets to #21 from #90. It is the eleventh single of Pitbull in the top 30.

At #33 Eminem's "Survival" moves up five in its second week in the chart. The US star has even brought another single to the chart this week as "Rap Gold" debuts at #42.

On the back of a performance on the Supertalent show, Celine Dion's 90s French song "Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore" reappears at #39. The song was never a hit back in the 1990s.

Further down, at #41, Ylvis and "The Fox" moves up four, while the every new week new single policy brings a new song of Justin Bieber at #46. It is called "All That Matters".

And the other new entries this week:

63. Dicks On Fire Feat. Lena - Revolution
72. Helene Fischer - Mit Keinem Andern
80. Brings - Kölsche Jung
91. Rihanna - What Now

The Album Chart

Helene Fischer is only the third act this year to manage to have two back-to-back stays as a number one in the album chart as her "Farbenspiel" is unmovable. After two albums with peaks at #4, The BossHoss have their biggest album yet with the arrival of "Flames Of Fame" at #2. Andrea Berg's "Atlantis" follows at #3, while three new offerings can be found at positions four to six. At #4 Pearl Jam's "Lightning Bolt" becomes the band's fourth album to peak at #4 in Germany (previous LP "
Backspacer" reached #3). A position behind, local band Jupiter Jones have their first top ten album with "Das Gegenteil Von Allem", while Paul McCartney's "New" is new at #6. VNV Nation have their second top ten album as "TransNational" enters at #9, while Trivium's "Vengeance Falls" is also their second album to ever crack the top ten as it arrives at #10.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 18.10

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

This week sees one of the most unexpected number ones this year as James Blunt's comeback single tops easily the German charts. The great "Bonfire Heart" comes as a pilot single of Blunt's "Moon Landing" LP and beats the #2 peaks of "You're Beautiful" and "1973". So, though many have considered him to be a one-hit wonder, the former soldier has once again proved that he is far from that. "Bonfire Heart", written with the help of One Republic's frontman and in the vein of the current indie-folk hype, arrives in the German charts two years after "I’ll Be Your Man" reached #40. It also becomes Blunt's fourth top ten single in Germany.

Thus, after spending three long weeks as #1, Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" slips to two, while the third position is once again held by "Dear Darlin'" and Olly Murs.

At #5 Klingande's "Jubel" moves up a slot to claim a new peak, while at #10 Avicii's "Hey Brother" shows that no one cares whether a song is officially released or not as the album track shoots itself from #22 and becomes the third song of the Swedish star to enter the top ten. Hopefully, the amazing tune will get a video at some point.

"Kuss Kuss Kuss", the previous single of local hip hop trio Fettes Brot, somewhat underperformed by reaching #35 earlier this year. Now the boys are back with a better song and a better placement as "Echo", which by the looks of it, will be the second single from Fettes Brot new album, enters at #12. It's the seventh single of Fettes Brot to reach the top 20, where they were last with "Bettina, zieh dir bitte etwas an" (peak #3) in 2008.

At #13 Finnish band Sunrise Avenue show once again their chart strength in Germany as their new single "Lifesaver" enters the chart to turn into the boys' third top 20 single, next to the #3 hits "Fairytale Gone Bad" and " Hollywood Hills". Last Sunrise Avenue were in the chart with "I Don’t Dance", which peaked at #33 in 2011.

A position behind, Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" is slowly cementing its status as her biggest hit to date, as the song moves up two to #14. At #16 we have another curious single storming the countdown. "Stolen Dance", the debut single of Kassel-born Clemens Rehbein, or as he is known in the list Milky Chance, was released in August but now finds its strength and flies from #64.

At #26 Bastille's "Things We Lost In The Fire" is starting to slow down its upward movement by advancing by just one position from #27.

At #32 we can found "Heartbreaker", the first single from Justin Bieber's plans to flood the market with a new song every week (to what effect this will influence the German charts, only time will tell). The song arrives after the #53 peak of "All Around the World". And yes, he still is lacking a top ten single.

At #36, up from #45, "Work Bitch", the latest offering of Britney Spears manages to equal the peak position of the star's least performing single in Germany ("If U Seek Amy"). The glory days now seem long gone.

After "Berzerk" (this week at #17) reached #10 a couple of weeks ago, Eminem brings even fresher material to the charts as "Survival" debuts this week at #38.

At #39 New Zealand's sensation Lorde is finally enjoying a top 50 presence as her US topper "Royals" moves up from #57. Several weeks ago Lorde entered the chart with "Tennis Court", which stumbled at #83.

Also on the rise is Drake's (best hit so far) "Hold On Were Going Home", which advances from #60 to #41, to become Drake's first ever single as a lead artist to enter the German top 50. Shamefully never getting the promotion he deserves, the US star has had only one song as a lead artist in the German charts so far - "Find Your Love", with a one-week stay at #65.

Further down the list, Voxxclub's catchy "Rock mi" moves two to #44, while the even catchier and phenomenal/awful (delete as appropriate) "The Fox" of Ylvis is finally inside the top 50 as it rises from #61 to #45.

Coinciding with the release of her new album, Helene Fischer's "Atemlos Durch Die Nacht" makes it inside the top 50 at #46 as a cherry-pick track.

At #48 though more or less Passenger is going to have a tough time not to be considered a one-hit wonder, he follows his #1 hit "Let Her Go" with "Holes", which climbs four.

And finally, this week sees the return of one Cher with new material. The legendary star has been absent from the chart since "Alive Again" peaked at #27 in 2001 and now is back with "I Hope You Find It" entering at #49 (fellow track "Woman’s World" is at #66). Cher's biggest hit in Germany is of course 1998's number one "Believe".

And the other new entries this week:

62. Marco Angelini - Wunder Gibt Es Immer Wieder
66. Cher - Woman's World
86. Pearl Jam - Sirens
90. Pitbull ft. Ke$ha - Timber
96. Sportfreunde Stiller - New York Rio Rosenheim

The Album Chart

Coming with mega-sales, of which even Andrea Berg can be envy, Helene Fischer crowns the album chart with her latest album "Farbenspiel", which follows the 2011 #1 LP "Für einen Tag". The schlager dominance continues with Andrea Berg at #2 as her "Atlantis" rises one, while Casper's "Hinterland" is down two to three. "Planet Der Lieder", the latest album of volksmusik veterans Kastelruther Spatzen comes new at #4, matching the peak of their best performing album so far "Und Singen ist Gold" from 2006. A new version of "Fire It Up" sees the return of Joe Cocker's latest album at #5, while Cher's "Closer To The Truth" debuts at #6. Cher's LP manages to reach the peak of her 1991 "Love Hurts" but is still far from the #1 "Believe". Also new inside the top ten is the latest from Korn. "The Paradigm Shift" enters at #7 - a considerable improvement from the #28 peak of their previous studio album. Interestingly, despite being home of her biggest singles to date, "Bangerz", the new album of Miley Cyrus, fails to reach the #4 peak of her previous one by entering at #9.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 11.10

Jason Derulo spends a third week on top of Germany's singles chart with his "Talk Dirty", with Katy Perry moving once again to #2 with "Roar" (up from #4) and Olly Murs' "Dear Darlin" slipping one to three.

At #4 "Animals", the dance anthem of Martin Garrix, advances a position from #5, while Klingande's excellent "Jubel" enters the top ten in its third week on the list by soaring six to #6. Also new in the top ten is "Hero" by Family Of The Year, which moves up four to #7 after a steady climb over the last few weeks.

Thanks to the new vocal version Klangkarussell's "Sonnentanz" has once again entered the top ten and is this week at #10, up from #14.

Alligatoah's "Willst Du" also continues its successful climb and after leaving the top 20 for a week makes it back at #14, an increase from #22.

Though "You Make Me" (this week at #49) is still Avicii's current single, album track and great tune "Hey Brother" is gaining more and more attention and is doing quite better as it is up six to #22.

The highest new entry for the week can be found at #23 coming from local band Jupiter Jones. The guys are most famous with "Still", which hit #10 back in 2011. "Rennen+Stolpern", which heralds the release of their third album, is the fourth single of Jupiter Jones to make it inside the top 100 and also the second most successful one.

It is strange how no one paid attention when Bosse released "So Oder So" several weeks ago as the song spend a week at the low end of the chart. Now, however, after winning the local Bundesvision contest (it is like Eurovision but for the different German states), the amazing song shoots itself from #96 to #25. It thus beats the #27 peak of Bosse's previous single "Schönste Zeit".

Further down the top 50, Bastille's "Things We Lost In The Fire" is slowly advancing towards the top 20 as it moves four to #27.

In its second week in the chart Max Herre's "Fremde" climbs from #53 to #32, becoming the fourth solo top 50 single of the ex-Freundeskreis singer. At #37, after a weak debut at #89 last week, "Der Letzte Blick", Xavier Naidoo's follow-up to #2 hit "Bei meiner Seele", makes a big jump as a result of the song participation in this year's Bundesvision contest.

Also thanks to his Bundesvision appearance Johannes Oerding has his first ever top 50 single with "Nichts Geht Mehr". The song is up to #43 from #64.

And finally, the official release of DJ Antoine Vs Mad Mark's "House Party" sees the song re-entering the countdown at #44. It's the third single taken from DJ Antoine's "Sky Is The Limit" album, which has produced two #15-hits so far.

The Album Chart

In the album chart local rapper Casper follows his first major album "XOXO" with another number one record as the excellent "Hinterland" debuts straight at the top. At #2 enters German medieval metal band In Extremo and their " Kunstraub". The band's previous two LPs reached the #1 slot. Last week number one album, "Atlantis" by Andrea Berg is down to #3, while the second part of Justin Timberlake's 2013 comeback "The 20 / 20 Experience-2 Of 2" is new at #4. Birdy's sophomore album "Fire Within" arrives at #5, improving on the 16 peak of "Birdy". Also new, at #7, is "Fortress" of US rock band Alter Bridge, which becomes the guys' first ever top ten album in Germany.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 4.10

Hate it or love it, it's a second week for Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" at the top of the German singles chart. He is followed by Olly Murs' "Dear Darlin", which recoups two positions and sits comfortably at #2. Thus the song now needs only a little push to become Olly's second number one, next to "My Heart Skips A Beat". It at least matches the #2 peak of "Troublemaker". The top three is rounded by Avicii's "Wake Me Up", which is down one from #2.

Further down the top ten, "Papaoutai" of Stromae advances this week to #6, proving that Germany unlike UK welcomes foreign and non-English music on its shores.

Showing once again what a chart force they are, Linkin Park bring "A Light That Never Comes", their collaboration with Steve Aoki, this week to #8 from #27 where they entered seven days ago. It's the sixth top ten single of the US rockers in Germany.

Lyric Video - Linkin Park

A couple of weeks ago I expected Eminem's comeback single "Berzerk" to be his next top ten single, but as the song slipped to #28 last week, I thought I was definitely wrong. Still, boosted perhaps by physical sales (do they matter any more?) "Berzerk" moves up eighteen and can be found at #10. The song does becomes Eminem's 13th top ten single - a feat which only a handful of male artists can be proud of.

Video

At #11 Family Of The Year's "Hero" continues its rise, up from #19, while French project Klingande and "Jubel" is also on the right path, as it moves in its second week from #30 to #12.

The schlager music can be the definitive ruler of the album charts at the moment, but as I've written before, there have been only a few singles matching this success (and curiously most of them come from male musicians). The things are, however, starting to slowly change as this week we see "Fehlerfrei" of schlager princess Helene Fischer entering at #20. It heralds the release of Fischer's new album (which will most certainly hit the #1 slot soon) and becomes the first ever top 20 single of the star. Her best performing song so far chart-wise has been "Ich will immer wieder … dieses Fieber spürn", which peaked at #30.

Audio

Five positions behind Helene, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis register their third top thirty single with "Same Love", which climbs seven to #25.

Video - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

After entering the top 50 last week, Bastille continue their climb with "Things We Lost In The Fire", which somewhat surprisingly shoots itself to #31 from #50.
Video

Britney Spears' latest "Work Bitch" is also on the rise, as the song moves up four positions to #37 in its second week in the countdown. Now with a released video, it may even go higher.

Video

We also have a re-entry of Cologne-based band Voxxclub with "Rock mi" at #45, while Passenger is following his global smash hit "Let Her Go" with "Holes" at #50. The song is up from #57.

The Album Chart

After giving up the throne in the albums chart to Die Aerzte (they are now down to #5), schlager queen Andrea Berg expectedly returns to #1 with "Atlantis". "Mechanical Bull", the latest album of Kings Of Leon debuts at #2, missing the #1 peak of their previous LP. Sting's "The Last Ship" is new at #3 becoming a yet another top ten album of the veteran star. Dream Theater's self-titled LP arrives new at #4. Two years ago the rock band peaked at #3 with "A Dramatic Turn of Events". Katie Melua's sixth studio album misses the top three unlike her four previous recordings. "Ketevan" can still be found at #6, two places above the soundtrack to "Metallica: Through The Never". "Immer In Bewegung", the fourth album of local band Revolverheld, comes in at #9 and for now becomes their worst performing one in terms of peak positions.
