German Chart Comments - Issue Date 27.04

After debuting last week at #3, surprisingly or not, Alex Clare has a number one hit in Germany on his account with his first ever single "Too Close". We should not underestimate the power of advertising after all and truth to be told, it's one of the most peculiar songs to reach the #1 lately.

Though many have expected Die Toten Hosen to have their second ever #1 single, the rock band has now to satisfy with #2 as "Tage wie diese" rises from #6.

While Olly Murs is down to #7 from #1, the top three is rounded up by Sean Paul's "She Doesn't Mind" (up from #8).

Inside the top ten there is also a new peak of Jason Derulo's "Breathing" at #5. The song thus becomes the singer's most successful in the country.

Following the break-up of local female trio Monrose (whose chart career was quite steady), the time has come for the singers to try their solo luck. Therefore we can find "The Way I Like It" of Mandy Capristo new at #11. The song is not the first listing of Mandy in the Top 100 as she had guest vocals on Peter Maffay's single "Die Zeit hält nur in Träumen an" towards the end of last year.

Two positions behind Mandy, Of Monsters And Men expectedly shoot their single "Little Talks" from #22 straight into the top 20.
Video

And the remaining new entries:

64. Rebecca Ferguson - Nothing's Real But Love - Despite the support of Viva, the pilot single of Rebecca Ferguson enters the countdown with not much of an impact.
Video
65. Jack Back feat. David Guetta, Nicky Romero & Sia - Wild One Two - It's a remix of the Flo Rida hit (this week at #15).
Video
66. Sak Noel - Paso (The Nini Anthem) - Time will tell but for now (and predictably) Sak Noel remains a one-hit wonder.
Video
72. Example - Kickstarts - Strangely "Kickstars" is the follow-up (at least in chart terms) of "Changed the Way You Kiss Me" (peak #8) as it is taken from the previous album of the British singer.
Video
97. Conor Maynard - Can't Say No - The Internet hype may be huge but Germany is not UK.
Video
99. Martin Solveig - The Night Out E.P. - The French DJ has been absent from the chart since "Ready 2 Go" reached #45 last year.
Video

The Album Chart
Finally Unheilig have to surrender the #1 position as Die Ärzte arrive with their latest LP "auch". The album is the fourth consecutive number one of the group. At #3 Morten Harket, the front-man of A-Ha, proves with "Out Of My Hands" that he'd probably have a strong solo career. At #9 Roman Lob, the man who will represent Germany at Eurovision, brings his first album in the countdown.

In Bulgarian Cinemas from 27 April 2012

Бел Ами / Bel Ami - Although it's always nice to see movies, and especially non-action stuff, from non-major studios released in Bulgaria, the fact that these films are actually no good should not be concealed. So thus comes this Guy de Maupassant-novel adaptation with Robert Pattinson in the leading role. To say that Pattinson has no acting skills would be a lie but he's definitely miscast in the role of amoral Georges Duroy. His performance is extremely stiff, which coupled with the cardboard characters around him, deprives the picture of any merits. The three leading ladies Thurman, Ricci and Scott Thomas, though good elsewhere, here do not deliver anything worth remembering, which, let's say it, is talent wasted. This all leads to too rushed and too far-fetched third act, which leaves the viewer with the bitter feeling of a missed opportunity for a great novel adaptation. The music is good though. Bulgarian Box Office Update - Weekend 20-23 April

Someone was not happy with the BO briefing
Finally after a three-week dominance Wrath of The Titans retreats from the number one slot with a decrease of 52% and a total of BGN 608,832. Cronus and Co were kicked off from the top by the ever-mighty Navy and Battleship. Though with 21 screens the movie manages to collect just BGN 60,030 for the weekend, which can be considered as disappointment. However, including previews the result bursts to BGN 112,087. The road ahead of the Kitsch-Rihanna movie is also looking rosy. For the record it should be mentioned that last Saturday was a working day for most of Bulgarians, which had definitely taken its toll on the box office.

Proving that there is no room for independent genre movies in Bulgaria, Woman In Black stumbles at #9 with just BGN 11,686. Oh and if you poll moviegoers in Bulgaria, you'll find out that majority of them hate Daniel Radcliffe. The Rock he is not...

Outside the top 10, arthouse flick Le Havre collects BGN 1,258 from one screen. The Aki Kaurismaki-directed film has BGN 4,228 including festival showings.

Compared to my projections, Battleship was close to my BGN 135,000 forecast, while Woman In Black achieved only half of my BGN 22,000 prediction.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 20.04

So after last week Michel Telo found himself lucky to return to the top and spend a tenth week there, now all justice is done as Olly Murs' reclaims the crown once again. Thus, Olly's "Heart Skips A Beat" makes a second consecutive week on top of the German singles charts.

His biggest competitor is "Forget Forget" of Caligola, which after soaring to #4 a week earlier, this time around rises to #2 to match the #2 peak of Mando Diao's biggest hit to date - "Dance with Somebody".

Coming as if from nowhere, British singer Alex Clare has the honour to register the highest new entry of the week at #3. "Too Close", even though still not a hit in Alex' native country, has perhaps benefited from its use on an Internet Explorer commercial.
After "Super Bass" was never allowed to chart in Germany, Nicki Minaj finally brings her first ever single (as a lead artist) in the German countdown. "Starships" makes a good debut this week at #17.
Audio

Of Monsters And Men are an Iceland band who arrive on the latest wave of radio-friendly hits in the upper reaches of the German chart. Their pilot single "Little Talks" can be found at #22 but I won't be surprised to see it in the top 20 quite soon.

Despite going straight at #1 in the UK, Chris Brown's "Turn Up The Music" is not so blessed in Germany as it enters the chart at #34. The single comes after "Next 2 You" peaked at #28 last year.
Video

And the remaining new entries:

56. Luxuslärm feat. Culcha Candela - "Mehr Gewicht" - Despite the help of Culcha Candela, the pop rock band has failed to enter the top #50. The song is Luxuslärm's biggest charting single so far though.
Video
68. Adele - "Rumour Has It" - It's interesting to see whether "21", the multi-platinum album of Adele, will manage to produce yet another hit.
Audio
99. One Direction - "What Makes You Beautiful" - There was a time in the past when Germany was famous for its fondness of boy bands. Now it is more famous for the fact that despite being massive in the UK and even the USA, One Direction flop massively in central Europe. For the record, this song was even released at the end of last year...

The Album Chart

There's no-one able to remove  Unheilig's "Lichter der Stadt" from the top spot, where the album is once again followed by Silbermond's " Himmel auf", while Adele's "21" returns to the top 3. The highest new entry as at #6 in the shape of "Stalingrad", the latest album of heavy-metal veterans Accept.

In Bulgarian Cinemas from 20 April 2012

Бойни кораби / Battleship - Whatever way you look at it, Battleship is a crap movie but still has one virtue - watching it you may just realise that no matter how maligned the Transformers franchise is, at least Michael Bay knows how to orchestrate action. And watching robots fighting is fun. Watching the Navy being glorious and kicking the ass of alien intruders (possible intruders as their motives are never explained) is not. In its core Battleship is a film made to be viewed as an advertising card for the Army as there is no single positive character who hasn't come from its rows. Oh, and all the others - scientists or aliens are really really bad... Still some set pieces look magnificent, while observing Rihanna growling can be amusing, but the movie at the end lacks humour, it is deprived of memorable characters and has a too simplistic plot. In other words, it possesses all the qualities to turn into a guilty pleasure in the future. Nevertheless, a must-see Battleship is not. (Forum Film) **

Жената в черно / The Woman In Black - It's great that even in the times of Saws and Final Destinations, a classic Gothic-vibed horror thriller can hit the screens (and especially the Bulgarian ones). The newest production of legendary Hammer studio benefits first from its Victorian setting, with the English countryside looking extremely menacing. Second, its director James Watkins manages masterfully to deliver slow-burning terrors and to make use of every single shot. With the attention towards detail meticulous and the fantastic work of cinematographer Tim Maurice-Jones, the movie is really scary without being disgusting with gore moments. In addition, the plot manages to surprise at times and last, but definitely not least, the film lies on the shoulders of Daniel Radcliffe as it marks his first post-Potter role. And the former wizard boy proves to all naysayers that he really has the acting chops. The planned sequel is a mistake though. (Alexandra) ****

Bulgarian Box Office Update - Weekend 13-16 April

Waiting for the BO results was a nervous experience
Despite the longer holiday weekend, Bulgarians were not that interested in going to the cinemas or at least were not tempted to check the new offers in them. So most of the older films show good holds, while children stuff is even growing. I should however point that the weekly comparison is a little bit misleading as this weekend consists of four days in comparison to three a week earlier.

Wrath of The Titans spends a third week on top. Though the horrible movie disappoints around the globe it has stolen BGN 548,529 so far in our country.

American Reunion, which you know I enjoyed, slides by just 16% and already has BGN 232,529. The top three is rounded by Pirates!, whose result is up 2% to a total of BGN 127,180.

At #4 Titanic's reissue falls by mere 4% and now has BGN 147,371 on board.

The highest new entry comes in at #5. The Cold Light of Day, which is described as bloody awful by all who have watched it, attracts BGN 29,442, or BGN 51,501 including previews. The steady, though unimpressive result, can be attributed to the fact that many were cleverly deceived that Bruce Willis has a leading role in the film.

At the same time Project X deservingly flops at #8 with just BGN 14,461 for the weekend and BGN 21,725 including previews. The title failed to attract any attention due to the lack of familiar faces in it and its high rating, which have kept teenagers away from the multiplexes.

The lack of any stars and the overall indifference towards horror in Bulgaria were also the reason behind Cabin In The Woods' miserable result of BGN 13,189. The movie is also showed on just six screens.

The top ten is left by John Carter, which with BGN 811,202 so far will definitely be one of the hits for 2012 on these shores. The 1m threshold however is out of reach. Mirror Mirror has BGN 106,967, which is more or less a disappointment, while the BGN 164,137 for 21 Jump Street are also underwhelming in view of the movie entertainment qualities.

Compared to my projections, both Project X and Cabin In The Woods were totally overvalued, while The Cold Light of Day was somewhat near to my BGN 64,000 forecast.

Next weekend's forecasts:

Battleship - 135,000, including previews
