Austria's Top Economic News - Week 25-31 July

Monday

Telekom Austria, which operates under its A1 brand in the country, celebrated the 1m user of its packaging offer of Internet, fixed network and mobile telecommunication on Monday. As a whole, the company has 5.1m mobile phone and 2.3m fixed network clients.
Austriamicrosystems said in the evening that its first-half net profit rose to EUR 14m from EUR 5.7m a year earlier. Sales went up 18% to EUR 113m. The company projects sales of EUR 260m for full 2011.

Tuesday

Austrian toll specialist Kapsch TrafficCom said Tuesday it had won a contract for the construction and operation of an electronic toll system in Portugal. The contract value was not disclosed.
Austrian Airlines, or AUA, announced it has completed the refurbishing of 21 A-320s from its medium-haul fleet. Via the move the company would be able to transport more passengers per flight.
Heimo Scheuch, the CEO of brick producer Wienerberger, told WirtschaftsBlatt on Tuesday that he expects the firm to be able to make a steady turnaround in the current year.
Kapsch TrafficCom also revealed in the evening it had decided to carry out a capital increase worth EUR 800,000. The proceeds from the move will be used for financing of toll projects. The company will also raise its free float to 38.1%.

Wednesday

Verbund, Austria's leading utility, said on Wednesday it had agreed to sell its 46% stake in French Poweo to Direct Energie. The purchase price stood at EUR 36m.
Verbund also published its financial figures for the first half of 2011. Its sales went up 18.1% to EUR 1.868bn, while net profit fell 16.2% to EUR 176.3m. The profit was burdened by negative effects from Verbund's stakes in Turkey, Italy and France. For full 2011 the company projects similar operating and net profits as in 2010.
Pankl Racing Systems AG announced it had bought US Superior Crankshaft, which was established by Gerold Pankl in 2004. Gerold Pankl was the founder of the Austrian company before selling his stake in it in 2004.
Low-cost air carrier flyniki transported some 1.13m passengers from Vienna in the first six months of 2011, an increase of 29% compared to a year earlier, Niki Lauda said.

Thursday

Motorcycle producer KTM Power Sports said Thursday its sales grew 24% to EUR 263m in the first half of 2011. The company's EBIT rose 18% to EUR 13.5m. Despite the challenging market conditions, KTM projects an increase in sales and earnings for full 2011.
Franz Gasselsberger, CEO of Oberbank, said the bank wants to operate 30 branches in Vienna in the future. By the end of the year Oberbank will run 16 branches in the capital.
Do-it-yourself store chain bauMax reported a 6% increase in its sales for the first half of 2011 to some EUR 730m. The company projects sales of EUR 1.6bn for 2011, up from EUR 1.5bn for 2010.
BDI - BioEnergy International said it had bought further 30% in its subsidiary Enbasys, raising its shareholding in the biogas technology firm to 81%.
On Thursday it also became clear that Austrian Airlines (AUA) continues to operate in the red, and that it was not certain that the company will be able to return to operating profit in 2011.
In the evening Erste Bank announced that it had completed the takeover of factoring specialist Intermarket. 

Friday

Erste Group said on Friday that its net profit rose by 5.2% to EUR 496.3m in the first six months of the year. Operating profit inched down 1.2% to EUR 1.967bn. The bank referred to high burdens because of the introduced bank tax in Austria and Hungary. Erste Group also said that it plans to repay the received state aid in the form of participation capital worth EUR 1.2bn in the late summer. The bank also revealed that it currently has investments of about EUR 50m in Greek government bonds.
Aluminium company AMAG said its sales rose 21% to EUR 429.2m in the first six months of the year. Net profit grew 29% to EUR 48.1m. The company expects a continuation of the positive trends in the second half of the year.
IT and PC company Quanmax revealed on Friday that its sales increased by one third to EUR 43.6m in the first half of 2011. Net profit went up to EUR 2.3m from EUR 1.7m. The company retained its forecast for EUR 100m in sales for full 2011.
On Friday cafe chain giant Starbucks said it had taken full control at its Austrian and Swiss subsidiaries, which so far had been co-owned with Greek Marinopoulos.
Strabag, Austria's largest construction group, was awarded the construction of the Pedemontana motorway project in Italy. As a leader of the winning consortium, Strabag will get EUR 1.4bn from the entire contract volume.
