Трансформърс 3 / Transformers 3: The Dark Side Of The Moon - You have to give the credit to Michael Bay. Not paying any attention to every single critic out there, he continues to do what he knows best - explosive popcorn movie staff. This time around, however, he has taken notice to many of the remarks against the second instalment of his Transformers franchise and has learned his lesson. And has made many new mistakes...
So gone are the overcomplicated plots, transformers with hanging balls and annoying robot twins, while Megan Fox has taken another (downward) acting path. However, for good or bad, everything else is in store - Sam Witwicki as the main character, pleiades of autobots and decepticons (some great choices - Shockwave, Sentinel Prime (geeks scream now!), some extremely poor - Que, two Predator-alike or in other words WTF!). Many of the second-tier characters are also present, including familiar faces such as Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson (okay), John Turturo (still fun), Sam's parents (why?) and some fresh ones - John Malkovich (he has been paid only for the first act, probably), Patrick Dempsey (surprisingly fine), Frances McDormand (great addition) and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the new love interest of Sam. And if you ever wondered whether you'll miss Megan Fox (fired/resigned - delete depending on the gossip you've heard), the answer is simple - yes, you would! Her replacement not only cannot act, but worst of all, why is she at all with a loser like Sam?
Anyway, no-one would expect Bay to be Christopher Nolan in terms of script or actors selection. Speaking of the script - it's predictable all the way, but unlike part 2 quite focused and linear, which is a big plus. Though, don't anticipate anything you've not seen before. But let's not forget that it is and always has been the robots' show, so this time around the director has considerably surpassed himself. The transformers battles are superb, the slow-motion used at the right moment allows you to feel the combat at the best way, why the editing and especially the sound work, including the music, are so meticulously done, that many of the wanna-be blockbusters should be envy. Add the excellent action scenes (the falling building scene and all moments of Shockwave are examples of why visual effects do matter) and the deep 3D, and you could have the perfect summer blockbuster. Just empty your mind before entering the cinema hall, it helps. (Forum Film) ***1/2
Пингвините на Г-н Попър / Mr. Popper's Penguins - Unfortunately, the output of Jim Carrey in the last five-six years (with a few B-movie exceptions) has proved that the man has passed his peak. And even more unfortunately, Mr. Popper doesn't change the situation but at least tries to do so. And in trying, it has turned into a surprisingly well-done children's movie, with one or two nice touches for the grown-ups. Carrey does his best, but strangely is becoming to look tired in this kind of comedy shtick, while the supporting cast, with one or two exclusions, is forgettable. And if this all sounds like the perfect ingredients for a two-star movie, here come the penguins to save the day. They are responsible for most of the great comedic moments in the film and most of all make everything, though absurd, click together. We just wish something R-rated to come from Mr. Ace Ventura soon and in view of the so-so boxoffice results of Mr. Popper, maybe we won't wait for too long. (Alexandra) ***
