Cinema releases in Bulgaria - 31 October 2014

I hope you've managed to catch up with most of the good movies currently in Bulgaria's cinemas as this week offers three more which by the look of it seem unmissable. Prior to their presentation, however, I want to give some thoughts on the films which I watched in the past seven days. First of them was the rather good, though not perfect, Fury. It's all been there, done that territory, but the movie offers some great performances, especially on behalf of the supporting cast, as well as some stunning war images. Though the tank action is not as plenty as it should have been, it's still one of the better war movies in the past few years. You can still catch it on IMAX or in the majority of cinemas in the country. The movies which you however will not be able to see any more on the big screen (unless Sony changes its distributor here in the next few weeks) are Whiplash and Foxcatcher, which were part of the So Independent festival. The two titles should immediately join the best-of list for 2014 shining with great performances, unique stories and asking more questions than giving direct answers to the audience. In Whiplash JK Simmons makes a career-best appearance as the all-demanding teacher in a music school - is he the villain or the hero of the story? At the same time, the three main performances in Foxcatcher scream Oscars whichever way you look at them. Channing Tatum finally shows some acting chops, while Steve Carell is just unrecognizable, sinking in the role of a multimillionaire burdened with too many issues. And as it is the case with many such films, they will not get a regular distribution here...

As regard the new releases this week: Nightcrawler, St. Vincent and John Wick - all of them come with glowing reviews from abroad, high scores on IMDB and don't be a fool to miss any of them and go watch Dracula Untold instead...

Nightcrawler sees Jake Gyllenhaal as a seeker of sensational news and comes with comparisons to modern classic Drive and a 8.5 rating on IMDB, coupled with a five-star review from Empire. I am quite certain that the movie would be a real thrill-ride but would definitely not be anyone's cup of tea.
Trailer

Next up is John Wick, which stars Keanu Reeves, who is back kicking asses and killing as many people as he can. With a 8.1 rating on IMDB and testimony of some friends who have already seen it, it's definitely worth watching.
Trailer

And finally comes St. Vincent, the movie of which many of you would have probably never heard. It actually comes as the first film headed by Bill Murray in years, starring also the ever-excellent Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts. Many of the Bulgarian film "critics" have praised the title as one of the films of the year, making you both laugh and cry. We'll see that soon.

Cinema releases in Bulgaria - 24 October 2014

In a peculiar twist in the Bulgarian film distribution, two movies released by independent companies will fight for the attention of more or less the same audience this weekend. Whichever wins, the audience will definitely have much to enjoy as the titles are definitely worth seeing. In addition, the latest edition of the So Independent festival will offer a small selection of US indie movies which will otherwise never seen the light (or is it the darkness?) of the cinema hall in the country.

Riding on a wave of strong reviews and the first place in the US box office, Fury, starring Brad Pitt and telling the story of a group of soldiers and their tank stranded somewhere deep in Germany at the end of the World War II, has been on my watch list for quite some time. The cast is definitely strong, the trailers look excellent, though the former film of director David Ayer - the bloody awful Schwarzenegger vehicle Sabotage is a reason to bear something in mind. Anyway, I am particularly certain that Fury will eventually deliver. And we should also appreciate the fact that the title is the first film released by an indie distributor on the two IMAX screens in Sofia. You can also watch it on 4DX in Cinema City Paradise. (Trailer)

A Walk Among The Tombstones may have been a misfire in the US, but with reviews on the positive side and Liam Neeson looking to be in a good form (in vigilante mood of course), it may be a positive surprise. And it also features Dan "Downtown Abbey" Stevens, who should get more cinema roles. Fingers crossed, this is more Taken 1 than Taken 2. (Trailer)

This week the little ones can also enjoy German 3D animation Knight Rusty, which doesn't seem to offer anything for cinemagoers who are not in the kindergarten.  (Trailer)

As regard the So Independent fest, the films which I intend to catch up this week are: Whiplash, Foxcatcher, The Master, The Words and Joe.

Шерлок Холмс: Игра на сенки / Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows - Question? Which franchise of Mr. Downey Jr. is the better one - Iron Man or Sherlock Holmes? Answer - the British-infused one of course. Two years after bringing to the world, their XXI-century incarnation of the most renowned British detective out there, Guy Ritchie and his leading actor are back with a bang. The second instalment offers a broader scope, terrific action and most of all - a great villain. Yes, Professor James Moriarty is revealed as the film starts but his maliciousness is displayed as early as "that" scene in the restaurant. Moriarty, in the role the excellent Jared Harris, and his schemes are not only a match for the skills of Holmes but also challenge him in an entertaining way, which is transferred immediately to the audience. Speaking of Holmes, Downey Jr. continues to relish in the leading role, supported with ease by Jude Law as Doctor Watson. The chemistry between the two actors is just perfect, boosted by the ever sharp dialogue. This time around, the detective adventures are joined by Noomi Rapace in her first major role after the Millennium trilogy made her a global star. She, together with Stephen Fry (as the other Holmes) suit immaculately to the story. In addition, the direction is more-or-less flawless, while the sets are astonishing (the Opera scene / The wood chase / The Swiss chalet are among the most remarkable for the year). At the same time, the music of Hans Zimmer elevates the movie with a star or two. If Tintin and Indiana Jones are your cup of Christmas punch, this game of shadows is definitely worth the play! (Alexandra) **** 1/2

Котаракът в чизми / Puss in Boots - Indisputably, Puss is among the best characters that the Shrek universe has delivered to the world and therefore a film about the cutest and simultaneously the most dangerous cat is always welcome. Thus, though not perfect, the latest Dreamworks animation succeeds in presenting an enjoyable origin story for the Banderas character. Speaking of Banderas, the most significant disadvantage for all Bulgarians is the fact that we are deprived of his voice, which is a major crime against cinema. Anyway, putting that aside (the motives behind dubbing the film are obvious), Puss continues to be an ace and he could easily rank among the coolest characters out there - just pay attention to how he drinks his milk and courts the female cats. At the same time, Kitty Softpaws, as his partner in crime, is interesting but needs more focus, while Humpty Alexander Dumpty is curious but may be too odd for younger viewers. The biggest flaw, however, can be found in the story and the quest for the magic beans, which just shows that the authors failed to let their imaginations fly. The detailed animation, the richness of the backgrounds, so typical for Pixar and even Disney are just lacking. Still, a second instalment has the chance to put Puss in an adventure worthy of his magnitude. Bring it on! (Forum Film) *** 1/2

Мисията невъзможна: Режим фантом / Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - Following this year's Fast Five, Mission Impossible comes to show us that Hollywood is still capable of great popcorn entertainment. The fourth mission has been produced on the wish of Tom Cruise and despite the lacklustre performance of the previous movie (it was rather good though). And we should be thankful to Mr. Cruise, as according to many, Ghost Protocol is perhaps the best in the series. And they had they reasons. First, the fourth part definitely justifies its title - this time around the missions are on the high end of the impossible scale - just watch Ethan Hunt hanging outside the tallest building in the world or making his way inside the Kremlin. At the same time, the new additions to his crew are spot-on. From sexy Paula Patton, through comic relief Simon Pegg to Jeremy Renner. Seeing how Renner handles the role, we should be calm that Jason Bourne is in safe hands come August. Director Brad Bird has done only Pixar stuff so far (Ratatouille and The Incredibles shine of his CV) but that seems to be quite enough to justify his transition to the world of feature films. And last, Ghost Protocol is among those rare movies, which really blossom from the use of Imax technology. Thus, if you have an Imax nearby, don't hesitate, accept the mission as quick as you can. (Forum Film) ****

Още нещо за любовта / Something More About Love (Bulgaria) - Though a certain Bulgarian "television" claims 2011 to be the year of the Bulgarian TV series production, the year will definitely also end being one of the richest in terms of local cinema production. The latest proof comes from first-time director Magdalena Ralcheva, who is keen to tell us the real life story of doctor Ivan Rumenov (Kalin Vrachanski) and his encounter with a family with Armenian roots in the city of Varna. However, all Ralcheva's efforts crash under her inability to clearly focus the storytelling. The biggest mistake is to put Kalin Vrachanski in the main role. Yes, he is a popular face but that doesn't translate directly into a great cinema actor. And, unfortunately Vrachanski seems too cold, too distant, too monotonous, too boring in the lead role, as if he is unable to show us any real human emotions. From there, his relationship with photograph Dikran (Simeon Ljutakov) and his key part in Dikran's life feels unbelievable and the viewer is left in front of the screen wondering why he/she should care about these characters. In addition, too many story details and support characters do nothing to help the story. And the man climbing the mountain throughout the whole film can rank among the most useless storytelling methods out there. Perhaps, we could have had a much better movie, if Ralcheva had decided to centre more on the Armenians - the mother, played by Maria Statulova, Dikram and his friends, and especially the mysterious and extremely gorgeous Melvin (in the role Sepide Delforuz) could have been fantastic if they had to deal with a more polished script and a more experienced and brave director. (A+) *1/2

As Kölsch and Glühwein were on my mind over the last week, I missed two of the premieres from Friday. One of them is the next typical Adam Sandler movie, and many say it's among his worst, while the other tries to look like an arthouse film, but has Gerald Butler and a machine gun. Oh, and let's not forget that a worthy candidate for the most redundant sequel of the year has also arrived...

Весели крачета 2 / Happy Feet 2 - By a definition penguins rank among the coolest creatures on earth. By a definition, though, a cute character doesn't make a movie. Happy Feet 2 comes five years after the first furore of the dance-loving feathery animals on the big screen. The first film was relatively okay but never needed a sequel. Especially one, in which the same ingredients are presented to us in a new package. So, yes, the universal truth that everyone is unique and should find their place in the world is once again thrust right under our noses. The problem is that, albeit from offering nothing new, the plot feels extremely patchy and derivative. New characters such as Bryan the Beach Master are underdeveloped and their actions inconsistent. At the same time, the attempt to make the two krills the new (Ice Age) squirrel fails big time. On the plus side, the animation is excellent, the landscapes dazzling but the feeling of cold remains even after the end credits. Only for the littlest ones. (Alexandra) **

Тайните служби на Дядо Коледа / Arthur Christmas - Ho ho ho, it's good that with the coming of the winter holidays comes the best animated movie of the year (Tintin not taken into account). Created by UK studio Aardman Animations, the makers of now modern classics Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit and Flushed Away, this story on the Santa Clause family will surprise many with its wit, sharp dialogue, memorable characters and irresistible charm. Although centred around the titular character, the younger son of Santa, the movie has a lot to offer with the ones in the background. The old Santa grandpa, his reindeer dog (yes, really) and the elf-packaging specialist rank among the best written supporting characters on celluloid lately. But what holds the film together is the attention paid to every detail of the story. The script, though telling a fairytale, feels believable and authentic. As if there really are elves and a giant sledge spaceship travelling around the globe each Christmas. Furthermore, the the numerous catchphrases and clever scenes mean that Arthur Christmas will be watched by kids and grown-ups not only this winter but in the future too. And this really defines a film as a true Christmas classic. (Alexandra) ****1/2

Кожата, в която живея / The Skin I Live In - Almodovar is among those directors who has rarely (almost never) taken a wrong step in their careers. Thus, his latest arrives with the hype of being his first ever attempt in the horror genre, which is neither entirely true nor false. You cannot expect a film like Saw or (thankfully) The Human Centipede  from a man such as Pedro, who is, and has always been, interested foremost in the complex relationships between people. The Skin I Live In deals with themes such as love, loss, guilt, redemption and unlike his previous efforts, this time around the tone is deliberately tuned down. It's not that the film lacks any of the typical Almodovar humour, but the feeling of darkness reigns over it and may repel those keen to experience once again his light touches. At the same time it's a movie whose every single scene screams Almodovar - from the use of colours and music, to the clothes which the characters wear and the appearance of old muses Antonio Banderas and Marisa Paredes. The strongest weapon of the movie, however, is its script. You know that, unlike most of the fellow bloggers or Bulgarian critics, I reveal almost zero details of the films' plot, so this time around I'll not even attach the trailer. Go and watch it (it's on a very limited release as great films often are) with an empty mind! (ProFilms) ****

Корумпирани ченгета / The Son Of No One - This cop drama wanna-be suffers from one major flaw - it doesn't know in what genre to fall in. From there the movie fails at so many levels, that even its brief running time (around 90 minutes) feels like a three-hour epоs. And not in a good way. First, it could not be a cop thriller as the writers didn't put enough meat in the arcs of any of the characters, and especially in the supporting ones. We are supposed to not care why Al Pacino or Ray Liotta act as they act, or what drives Juliette Binoche's behaviour. On the other hand, The Son Of No One could not be a human drama as Channing Tatum, who is the protagonist of the story, doesn't have the acting chops to bear such. And at the end, the big reveal is so stupid, incoherent and lacking of any logic, that it's a shame that the Tatum-director Dito Montiel tandem has come up with such a misfire after two relatively solid films. Здрач Зазоряване: Част 1 / The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 - It's easy to start mocking at the Twilight saga and those who have found the previous three instalments appalling (and they have their strong reasons) will not be convinced by this almost final part either. The director may be fresh to the franchise, but the recipe is kept intact. Furthermore, the decision to break the last book into two separate movies, having in mind the lack of enough meat to sustain such a move, means that for two hours you'll only watch Bella and Edward throwing each other full of passion and longing looks.

So narratively speaking, Twilight 4.1 drags for so unbelievably long that even Harry Potter 7.1 can be felt as a compromised film in comparison. However, thus, the fans, and they, surprisingly or not, are millions, will find much to rejoice in Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 - the visuals are slick, the camera work steady, the costumes and the interiors/exteriors just taken out from a catalogue. What is more, the two hours allow the love story, the wedding, the honeymoon and ...(deleted for spoilers) to blossom.

Unfortunately, though Kristen Stewart continues to struggle in the central role (though I have to blame the book itself - rarely has such a melancholic and passive protagonist appeared on page/screen). In one of the scenes Bella asks Edward something such as "Don't you see how happy I am?", no Bella neither Edward nor the audience sees anything in your emotionless face. There is a saying in Bulgarian, which fits perfectly to describe Stewart's character - мърда, та дрънка. At the same time Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are somehow okay, though any of their efforts are blown away by the unintentionally laughable lines and clumsy CGI work, especially regarding the wolves. But I have to stop here. If you're a fan, you'll devour it, if not, try something else in the cinema listings. It's not that you're given much of a choice this weekend... (A+) **

Войната на боговете / Immortals - Though with a relatively short movie career so far, Tarsem brings his latest title with his usual trademark - more style than substance. But who cares when everything is conveyed properly and when there's an actual, albeit shallow, story to bring the viewer from the beginning to the very end (take point Sucker Punch!). Despite the inevitable comparisons with 300, in fact Immortals has its own flavour and apart from one or two scenes has nothing similar to the Sparta adventures. The scope of the Theseus adventures is considerably smaller than, let's say, Clash of The Titans, but Tarsem delivers every shot enriched with astonishing colours and awesome score. Though Henry (superman) Cavill is solid as the lead character, the meatiest role goes to Mickey Rourke who has amazing time being the villain. It's been awhile since I've seen a really mean and threatening antagonist on the big screen. At the end, however, Immortals is let down by the script and especially the lazy work related to the involvement of the Gods. If Tarsem have played more with the motives behind the immortals' actions, their intrigues and conspiracies, he might have made a superior film. The Greek mythology continues to lack its really thrilling 3D cinema adventure. (Tandem) ***

Приключенията на Тинтин / The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn - Perhaps it's no coincidence that the previous movie directed by Steven Spielberg was Indiana Jones 4 - a film not without its merits, but ruined by an ill-advised finale and too obvious CGI effects (blame Lucas for that). Now, Spielberg returns with Tintin, which could easily pass as an Indiana Jones adventure and thanks the cinema gods, it's closer to the spirit of the first ones than to the latest. Based on the famous Herge comics, Tintin is the perfect fit for a director like Spielberg, a man who has turned into the king of quality entertainment. The film also marks his first endeavour in the world not only of animation, not only of motion capture but also of 3D. And watching Tintin, it's obvious that the director has had a great time while doing it. Spielberg, as a kid with a new fancy toy, engulfs in the latest technologies and lets his imagination flies.

Thus, the action scenes are top spot perfect, clever and full of dynamics, scenes which could have never been created using the technologies of the past. The actors, though renowned, are more or less unrecognisable, but all the better for it, as you'd be able to invest more in the characters. And believe me, it's a movie full of remarkable characters. Tintin aside, the cherry of the cake are his dog Snowey, the Thompson brothers and the ever-drunken Captain Haddock. The movie also marks the return of legend John Williams as a composer, who despite using familiar themes, has once again elevated a picture with his music. At the end, Tintin is a film which not only justifies repeat viewings but puts the solid base for the creation of an iconic movie franchise. Peter Jackson - the bar has been lifted high! (Alexandra) ****1/2

Кинти в небето / Tower Heist - When an interesting premise meets a director who has yet to prove his capabilities, the results are rarely good. And once again, Brett Ratner has managed to deliver a mediocre movie, at best. Tower Heist, who desperately tries to be Ocean's Eleven for the average Joe, starts slowly, speeds up towards the middle and crashes at the end. Despite the popular cast, it's Eddie Murphy who only manages to escape the clutches of the script and to return to a long forgotten form. Precious' Gabourey Sidibe is also fantastic and should be seen more on the big screen. The others, led by Ben Stiller, are, bar one or two scenes, just boring. The biggest downfall, however, is the heist itself - so unimaginable and uninteresting that at the end leaves unpleasant taste in the mouth. The US critics liked it though...(Forum Film) **

Кецове / Sneakers (Bulgaria) - Some have called October 2011 the month of the Bulgaria movie and as Kecove is the third Bulgarian title to get a major release with enormous promotion, they may have a point here. Furthermore, if you ask me, Kecove is one of the best movies our humble cinema industry has produced lately, raising questions which not many filmmakers in Bulgaria dare to ask. The film, which follows a group of people escaping from their problems in the big city and having the summer of their lives on a stranded Bulgarian beach, succeeds in encapsulating the emotions of a generation - let's say those born in the 1980s, who somehow struggle to fit in a place suffocating from thugs and pop-folk culture. People, who against all odds, chose to live in a country, which will eventually fuck them up (and the current elections are just another proof of that). Directors Valeri Jordanov and Ivan Vladimirov, however, opt not to deliver their message with a heavyweight drama (as many of the colleagues do) but via using light, even dreamy, methods they make a movie, which will touch many of its viewers. Perhaps, some older cinemagoers will find it difficult to understand the meaning behind Kecove and despite the fact that at moments the film is on the borderline of being too alternative (camp fires were never my thing), the movie is a haunting and respectful directional debut, supported by its surprising strong cast. Bonus points also for no product placement (samardala not taken into account) on the screen. (A+) ****

Дилъри на време / In Time - In Time is the latest flick by director Andrew "Gattaca" Niccol, who is steadily turning into a master of the stylish sci-fi thriller. Asking serious questions once again, this time about mortality, Niccol, who has also written the script, delivers, albeit not the perfect film, a movie intelligent enough to not insult its audience. It's also the third movie of Justin Timberlake for just six months, and though many still long for his music endeavourers, the young star is slowly but steadily becoming a real actor. JT is supported by an entirely young cast (it's in the script after all), with Cilian Murphy and Vincent "Mad Men" Kartheiser having the most meaty roles, while Amanda Seyfried nailing the role of a 21st century Bonnie. With Niccol's good eye for visuals and music, the movie just shows that you don't need to spend a bucket full of money to have a great sci-fi production. And though, towards the end, In Time feels a little bit rushed and some plot lines remain loose and unanswered, it's a film for which you should definitely find time in the local multiplexes. (Alexandra) ****

Хъбъл / Hubble 3D (IMAX) - I've never really been a fan of these IMAX documentaries, and the fact that they are always dubbed awfully in Bulgarian will not make me change my mind soon. However, the latest title, which tells the history of the famous telescope, benefits from the real importance of its subject matter. The filmmakers magnificently recreate on the biggest screen the visuals of the galaxies caught by the Hubble eye and thus show how little, peculiar and precious Earth is. Add an extra star, if you still have your astronomy textbook nearby... (Imax) ***

Заразяване / Contagion - The films of Steven Soderbergh fall into two distinct categories - they are either too art, even unwatchable (Full Frontal, I'm looking at you) or great crowd pleasers ( the Ocean's franchise). So where does Contagion rank then? Perhaps somewhere in between, and all the better for it. Soderbergh's latest movie is a horror flick at its heart, raw and even documentary at places. However, unlike the so popular (not for Bulgarian distributors though) found footage films, the director hasn't shot a movie deprived of the magic of cinema, and has polished it as best as he can - the camerawork is great, the music remembering, the various cast strong. The biggest strength of Contagion is that its antagonist is realistic as the next flu pandemia and therefore it would scare the shit out of you. If you're faint hearted, you'd better avoid it, or the next time someone starts coughing at your direction, you may run in panic. Soderbergh has succeeded in catching and transferring to the screens all reactions stemming from such a threat - the madness, the desperate desire to save the loved ones, the ignorance, the falsification, the paranoia and so on and on. At moments it is a tough watch, but at the end it is Steven Soderbergh in his best, Traffic, mood. (Alexandra) ****

Нещото / The Thing - This 2011 prequel of the Carpenter cult movie was always gonna be maligned by critics and fans due to comparisons with the original. I, however, haven't watched the 1982 movie (yes, blame me), so I can only judge this horror title by its own merits. So, it has slick visuals, good CG effects but suffers from the lack of any real tension. Yes, at times it has one or two good touches, and as a whole the sense of paranoia that spreads after the thing is released is well captured on screen. However, once the alien takes its form, the film starts to look like a rip-off of the Scorpion king from the Mummy franchise. On the surplus side, kudos should go to the decision to use Norwegian actors for most of the cast, which is creating atmosphere. The moment, however, the main heroine, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, appears on the screen, the movie starts to crack from wooden acting. Anyway, it's not a completely lost opportunity and genre fans will find a thing or two worth watching in it. (Alexandra) **1/2

Мръсна игра / Trespass - When a movie with A-list stars such as Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman gets dumped to a limited release in the States, you already know something is not right. Add to this, the director, the now infamous Joel Schumacher, who hasn't shot a decent movie in ages, and the alarming light should already flash in red. And rightly so. Trespass is a film suffering first from obnoxious narrative - several story developments are repeated to ad nausea levels, the actors, before getting beaten and threatened by a gun, only yell in front of the camera (often at once) perhaps to silence the ridiculous script full of betrayals, unimaginative character motives and predictable story twists. Second, the editing and, as a whole the directional work lacks any sense of thrills or action, while the camera is hectic and just confusing. Over the past years Nicolas Cage has consistently trying to score his worst role, and maybe he has succeeded here - rarely is overacting on such a display, while Nicole Kidman struggles in the role of a femme fatale. Following the star-heavy and dreadful Dream House from earlier this month, you could not help but wonder if the Bulgarian distributors do not deliberately seek movies with strong cast but with zero quality... In Bulgarian Cinemas from October 14

Тримата мускетари / Three Musketeers - If you ever wonder how a movie could be so appallingly bad that at the end it's (deliberately or not) funny, look no further than the latest version of The Three Musketeers. Even prior to its cinema arrival, the film was plagued by its awful trailers, even more awful posters and the not-so-good reputation of director Paul W.S. Anderson. So, I doubt that there was someone somewhere expecting anything serious to come out of this. And believe me, if you take the film seriously, you'd regret any penny spent for watching it. On the other hand, if you take it as a parody of the genre, of acting, of even cinema as art, you wouldn't be able to stop laughing at its ridiculousness. Of course, all Dumas purists will be furious as the story has only threads related to the source novel, while the writers have taken such liberties in terms of script and action which would make even the Fast and Furious team envy. Furthermore, given the director and his muse (real life wife Milla Jovovich), it's not surprising that some scenes are directly reminiscent to the Resident Evil franchise. Speaking of the cast, yes, they all overact to a point that you'll ask yourself whether this is intentionally or not. Logan Lerman as D'Artagnan is not as horrendous as many would like you to believe (and his final show-off with Rochefort is actually quite entertaining), Orlando Bloom sizzles with the awfulness of his character, Christoph Walz should have been a little more threatening, while the cherry of the cake is of course Milady. Jovovich's character is so overblown, that you'd only say WTF every time she shows her action chops. As it's often the case with Anderson, his visuals are spectacular, his eye for action good, while the 3D gimmick really works. At the same time, everything is absurdly polished - you won't find Paris so clean and tidy even nowadays, let alone in those dark times, while the costumes are, let's say, just ridiculous. And the less said about the fashion-obsessed king and his queen, the better. To sum it up - it's a total trash but on the verge of becoming a cult (Van Helsing) one. (A+) ** 1/2

Островът / The Island (Bulgaria) - October sees another Bulgarian title hitting the screens. The Island comes after Eastern Plays, the praised by critics debut of director Kamen Kalev. Unfortunately, many say Kalev's second feature is a step back for the young director. The movie starts well but its second (big brother) half is misjudged and doesn't work. This, however, is the opinion of many people who saw the movie at its premiere. No bloggers were invited there, so no rating and no recommendation by me. The trailer looks really good, though.

New in Bulgarian Cinemas from October 7

Къщата на сенките / Dream House - The parade of bad movies continues with the start of October, with one of the biggest disappointments being this horror misfire. The trailer has already revealed the big twist, so if you've never watched it, don't do it now. Not that this is the most serious problem with Dream House. In addition to the spoiled twist, everything else in the plot is not only awfully predictable but is soaked with ridiculousness, in which even the big names from the cast do not believe. Worst, the movie lacks any tension or thrills, while the settings, the music and the cinematography are more typical to B-film stuff. Speaking of the cast, it's not only misjudged but also feels incredibly embarrassed from everything going on in front of the camera. Daniel Craig makes a low point in his career, while Rachel Weisz should have appeared in Mummy 3 rather than this. In other words - it's a house which should have been locked forever. (Alexandra) *

Жива стомана / Real Steel - It looks like I have a real problem with the work of director Shawn Levy. He has definitely become a craftsman who despite his steady career has never done anything to pass the test of time. His movies are like a box of chocolates - shiny and sweet but at the end you may only have cavitas. Unfortunately, the situation doesn't improve much with his latest outing. This Hugh Jackman-vehicle is still better than the disastrous Nights in The Museum, but at the end you'll just crave for more. Storywise, the film is simple and coherent, albeit predictable and has a feelgood father-son story that will be cherished by many (and especially by the US critics). Still, at places the writers didn't resist the urge to fall into corniness, which could make you laugh when you're supposed to cry. Hugh Jackman (steady girls!) is okay in the title role but is easily outshined by Dakota Goyo, the young actor who plays his onscreen son. Technically the film is exquisitely made, but when the much maligned by critics Transformers offers more intriguing robot fights, then some gadget in the Real Steel engine may be out of steam. Ларго Уинч: Конспирация Бирма / Largo Winch 2 - Last time I checked, it's only when the French combine action with comedy they can really come up with a good action film. However, when they try to copy Hollywood in the genre, the end product is curious but shallow. And just to prove this, some of the best moments of Largo Winch 2 are those when Nicolas Vaude, in the role of the title character's sidekick, is on screen. Anyway, the makers of the movie have given their best to produce some great action scenes (the initial car chase or the parachute jump), while Tomer Sisley is steady as Largo Winch. The too complicated plot, the long running time and on top of it the acting of Sharon Stone however make every effort to be in vain. (Pro Films) **

Операция - Шменти капели / Operacia - Shmenti kapeli (Bulgaria) - It's a Bulgarian movie distributed by his director, famous comedy actor Vladi Vargala, and so, no one cared to invite the "insignificant" bloggers at a screening. It's not that when I saw the trailer I had any desire to watch the whole thing...

In Bulgarian Cinemas from 30.09

Оглупели от любов / Crazy Stupid Love - It's admiring that even in the summer of the R-rated comedies, a film not relying on rude humour and graphic scenes can be as equally funny and sharply written. So, welcome Crazy Stupid Love, a movie which (maybe) was conceived as the usual show of Steve Carrell but succeeds to be far more than that. Apart from Steve, who fills the shoes of his character with ease, the strong cast boasts also the excellent Julianne Moore, man-of-the-moment Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. And, it's scientifically proven that any film is elevated by 50% with the presence of the future Gwen Stacy. Oh, and let's not forget Marisa Tomei, whose craziness is unforgettable. The pearl of the movie, however, is its great script, which succeeds the unthinkable - to be surprising and at the same time coherent. The several story lines are masterfully intervened, while writer Dan Fogelman keeps track of every character until the very end. Definitely the feel-good movie of the season and one of the best Hollywood comedies for 2011... (Alexandra) ****

Елитни убийци / Killer Elite - Though billed as a vehicle of Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro, this spy thriller plays like a typical movie for the Transporter star, with all resulting cons and prons. On the one hand, if you are a fan of Statham's action skills, you won't be disappointed, on the other, however, if you want subtlety so necessary for making such type of films really good, look somewhere else. After all Jason will growl, fight and kick ass until the very end. On the plus side, the film's story is more or less intriguing and will grip you from the very start. Unfortunately, though, at the end it starts to feel too heavy with plot details, and perhaps more brave editing would have helped. As regards Clive Owen, his facial hair is not so ridiculous as it looked in the trailer, while the fact that De Niro plays a supporting role is something which I always cherish these days. A movie which will not join the elite club but is passable for the killing of two spare hours. (Forum Film) ***

In Bulgarian Cinemas from September 23

Деца шпиони 4 / Spy Kids 4 - It's tough to find anything worthy in the first three Spy Kids films, but somehow there was some charm infused in them. This time around, the original spy kids have grown up (unfortunately only in age and not in acting capabilities), while we have a new pair of spy wanna-bes replacing them. It's not surprising to say that the plot of the fourth part is so hallow, incoherent and honestly stupid, that compared to it even a Johnny English movie could be taken as a classic. Moreover, this time the acting is not only eye-poppingly bad but is further undermined by the Bulgarian voice cast. Guys and girls, I know that you're from the "greatest" acting school in Sofia, but next time around try harder to earn your check, or best - give way to the more skilful actors out there. But let's get back to the film in question. I've always wandered how a director such as Robert Rodriguez could actually put his name behind an excuse of a film like this one and thus to make me look on favourites like Machete and Sin City with a different eye. Anyway, he did it, and was even lazy enough to make the gadgets of the spies awfully boring. And boy, an oil pissing, metal balls sh**ting dog is just wrong... Oh, if you wanna try the promised 4D effect, just go to a cosmetics store or to the toilet, it's the same. Please, keep your children safe at home with a nice Disney or Pixar DVD... (Forum Film) *

Отвлечен / Abduction - I tried to be as less prejudiced as possible when going to the screening of Abduction, which has been declared "guilty" by many movie "specialists" for just being a vehicle for Twilight star Taylor Lautner. Unfortunately though, the moment the plot starts rolling, the film collapses hit by lazy scripting, wooden performances and worst - the lack of any tension. And the fact that it avoids too obviously the R-rating is not cool either. For many it would be surprising to find that Taylor Lautner is not the worst thing in the movie. Yes, he is not the best young actor out there, but at least shows some good action skills. The same could not be said for his girlfriend (or sort of) Lily, daughter of Phil, Collins. Don't know what her problem is - is she helpless in the acting career or just felt embarrassed to be around Jacob (sorry, Taylor), but her presence on the screen in the entire movie is just awful. The main problem of the film however is not the acting but the ridiculous plot. The premise was good, at least on paper it sounds okay, but the big revelation is so stupid and lazily conceived that you'll find more intrigue in Johnny English Reborn (yes, I used that movie reference twice today). Perhaps the movie writers should find another job, but such a script should have never seen the green light. On the plus side, the film has several well paced action scenes and boasts Sigourney Weaver in a supporting role, but I doubt that this would get Abduction (even the name of the movie feels not right) out of the Razzie Awards territory. (Forum Film) * 1/2

Скъпа, няма не мога / I Don't Know How She Does It - I really doubt that, as the character of Sarah Jessica Parker, I will have the time and most crucially the nerves to sit through this rom-com schlock. (Tandem)
