Мъжете, които мразеха жените / The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - The latest movie of David Fincher comes with a bucket full of expectations. First, it is based on a way too appreciated book and second, it is a remake of a quite popular Swedish film released not so long ago. Thus, the bar for Fincher's version has always been set up in the skies. And here we should thank the movie moguls for giving the assignment to the director of Seven and The Social Network, as Fincher is among the few out there who are completely able to turn the job right. Thus, the director brings yet another masterpiece in his swelling with hits CV. His version is directed with a firm hand, offers great actors and most of all succeeds in being interesting and thrilling even if you've read the book or watched the original movie.

Of course, the film backbone has always been its protagonist Lisbeth Salander and the casting of Rooney Mara is crucial for its success. And be certain that this movie will make Mara a star, just as Noomi Rapace before her. Daniel Craig is also good at the role of Mikael Blomkvist, though the most important character of the film remains its Swedish setting and its style. Kudos to Fincher and the writers who didn't try to relocate the action to somewhere else, say Alaska, as this story of frozen emotions and deeply buried horrible secrets clicks excellently in northern Europe. And though some faint-hearted will find it hard to sit through one or two scenes, the direction of Fincher, the strong script, the five-star music of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and last, but not least, the camerawork turn The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo of the first event film of 2012. Когато падне мрак / The Darkest Hour - Somehow I've never expected this Bekmambetov-produced alien-invasion movie to shine in terms of quality, but at least hoped for it to be a mindless fun. Unfortunately, at the end it's a thorough disaster. Apart from the B-movie dialogue and the awful acting, The Darkest Hour has a ridiculous, tension-free script and what is worse even the effects are inferior. The alien threat quickly wears off, while the decision to take everything seriously and ignore any irony kills the film. Still, The Darkest Hour, with some magnificent set pieces, serves as a glorious promotion platform for Moscow. However, watching it, you'll just wish to have a lot of vodka at your disposal, just to help you forget what is going on on the screen. (Alexandra) *

50/50 / 50/50 - Congratulations to the distributor for releasing this independent movie. I still haven't watched it though. Critics globally say it's rather good, so I guess it's worth the ticket price. (Forum Film)
