German Chart Comments - Issue Date 9.12

The latest change on the top of the German singles chart surprised many as Lana Del Rey's amazing "Video Games" advances three positions to replace Rihanna on the top. As the download charts pointed nowhere near Lana's success, her movement up the chart came really out of the blue. Seeing such a classy song on the top (sorry haters) is just another proof of why the German music charts continue to be among the most interesting out there.

Taio Cruz's "Hangover", which was almost certain to be #1, has to satisfy itself with the runner-up slot, while "We Found Love" slips to #3.

Just outside the top three, Adele's "Someone Like You" moves up from #6, with the arrival of her live DVD.
Inside the top ten, last week's debutant Gotye shoots his pilot single "Somebody That I Used To Know" from #20, also surprising many observers along the way. It's a great song, so who cares.

Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" has also made it among the first ten by going up to #9 from #15.
At the same time Bruno Mars occupies #14 and #15 simultaneously as his Twilight hymn "It Will Rain" soars from #26 to #14, while the (superior) "Marry You" stands a position behind.

The highest new entry is at #23 belonging to Jason Derulo. "It Girl" is the follow-up to the singer's "Don’t Wanna Go Home", which reached #11. Apart from "What If", all singles of Jason have placed inside the top 30 in Germany.

Coinciding with the start of the German edition of The Voice, show's mentors Nena, Xavier Naidoo, The Bosshoss and Rea Garvey performed a remake of David Bowie's classic "Heroes". Thus, the song comes fresh at #28. Curiously, the original has never charted in the country...

At #29 Bushido and Sido's collaborative project 23 comes with its second single "Erwachsen sein". The rappers are supported this time around by legend Peter Maffay, who recently entered the countdown with his own "Die Zeit hält nur in Träumen an", which however has disappeared quickly.

At the same time Sido brings a new single in the countdown on his own. "Geboren um frei zu sein" is the first proper solo material released by the singer after his MTV Unplugged album from last year. The song charts this week at #41.

Let's not forget the #35 new entry of Ed Sheeran, one of the most successful UK newcomers this year. "The A Team" has its (late) release in Germany and should have been higher...

Apart from many Christmas-themed re-entries, there is only one new song entering the top 100. Matthias Reim's holiday single "Letzte Weihnacht (Last Christmas)" makes an unspectacular debut at #99. And yes, it is a cover of Wham!'s classic.

The Album Chart

In the LP chart Udo Lindenberg is unmovable at the summit despite the arrival of Bosshoss' "Liberty of Action" at #4 and Adele's "Live at The Royal Albert Hall" at #5.
