German Chart Comments - Issue Date 31.05

An influx of new entries, most of which come from this year's Eurovision contest, characterises this week's German chart. The biggest winner however are Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams who add Germany to the long list of worldwide charts where "Get Lucky" goes to #1. The single advances two and replaces Beatrice Egli and her schlager anthem "Mein Herz" from the summit just a week after the song debuted there. Beatrice is down to #3, while former number one - Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound" is still at number two.

The highest new entry comes from German band Frida Gold, who've been gaining in momentum over the last few years and deservingly "Liebe ist meine Rebellion" becomes their biggest ever hit by entering at #4. The song is based on 90s Gala single "Freed From Desire", which peaked at #14 in 1997.

A position behind Frida Gold we can find Emmelie de Forest, this year's Eurovision winner from Denmark and her "Only Teardrops". The success of the single is far from the #1 smash of Loreen's "Euphoria" from last year, though the latter's performance was more a one-off than a pattern for the contest so the entry of Emmelie inside the top 5 is actually at the end quite an achievement.

As if Norwegian duo Madcon are destined to always come around the Eurovision contest as this week their latest single "One Life" makes (somewhat surprising) appearance in the top ten by hitting the #9 position. It becomes the fourth top ten single of Madcon next to "Beggin'", "Glow" and "Freaky Like Me". The song features the vocals of Kelly Rowland, who is quite accustomed to give a supporting hand to top ten hits.

Inside the top 50, the Eurovision is also to be "blamed" for the #24 new entry of Norway's "I Feed You My Love" by Margaret Berger, the #39 one of Hungary's "Kedvesem (Zoohacker Remix)" by Byealex and the #49 appearance of Anouk's "Birds" from the Netherlands. Music lovers know Anouk with her "Nobody's Wife" from the 90s but it's quite strange to see "Birds" outperforming by a mile the #87 peak of the hit from 1997.

Two cinema hits are responsible for two of the non-Eurovison related new entries in the top 50 this week as Fast & Furious 6 gave us the first proper music hit from the series with "We Own It" of 2 Chainz feat. Wiz Khalifa (new at #28), while The Great Gatsby features the new Fergie song "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)", which enters at #41. Unfortunately the quite better "Young and Beautiful" of Lana Del Rey, which features heavily in the underwhelming movie, appears at just #74.

We should also not overlook the new entries at #40 by Alex Hepburn and "Under" -- the debut single of the promising UK singer; at #44 where Blue follow their top ten hit "Hurt Lovers" with "Without You" (the 14th top 50 hit of the former boy band) and at #46 where Lena brings new material with "Mr. Arrow Key" - the third single taken from the latest album of the German star.

The Album Chart

Daft Punk score this week a double feat as their fourth studio album "Random Access Memories" debuts directly at number one. It thus prevents DSDS's winner Beatrice Egli's debut album from hitting the summit as "Glücksgefühle" enters at #2. As Daft Punk, Thirty Seconds To Mars are also having their biggest moment as "Love Lust Faith + Dreams" comes in at #3, becoming the first album of Jared and co to enter the top 10 in Germany. Also new at #5 is Airbourne's "Black Dog Barking" (second career-best) and at #10 Jamie Cullum's "Momentum" (career-best).
