German Chart Comments - Issue Date 23.01

Despite its slow start in the autumn and the fact that it is the third official single from the "Motion" album of Calvin Harris, "Outside", his second collaboration with Ellie Goulding, manages to outrun this week's competition and to become the first number one single of the British star in Germany. Of course, Calvin Harris has already been at #1 but only as the man behind Rihanna's smash "We Found Love". Thus "Outside" rises five to replace "Walk" of Kwabs at the summit. The latter moves down one to #2 after only a week at the top. Up one, and returning to the top three is James Howard Newton's "The Hanging Tree" with the vocals of Jennifer Lawrence. The song has now a new trendy pop remix, so don't expect it to fade away soon.

The highest new entry belongs to local newcomer Ado Kojo and his debut single "Du liebst mich nicht" at #6. The R&B singer from Cologne got support from famous YouTube star Shirin David for this cover of the #1 hit of Sabrina Setlur (remember her?) from 1997.

Mark Ronson expectedly scores his second top ten single in Germany as "Uptown Funk" rises seven to #7. It is thus also the fifth top ten single of Bruno Mars.

Up three to #9 we have "Blank Space" of Taylor Swift, which turns into the third single of the US superstar to enter the top ten in Germany. Previous one "Shake That" peaked at #5.

Mark Forster is up one to #12 with "Flash Mich", while joining the list of 2015's first hits is Kygo's "Firestone", which enters the top 20 in its third week at #19, up from #33.

Also on the rise is "The Nights" by Avicii, this time at #22, up from #29. After debuting last week at #71, "Ayo", Chris Brown and Tyga's first release from their collaborative album, skyrockets to #23. Chris Brown was that high in the German chart way back in 2011 when "Don't Wake Me Up" reached #11. The US star is also part of the new entry at #30, in which he provides support to Kid Ink's next single "Hotel". Prior to that "Body Language" peaked at #54. Kid Ink's only time in the top 40 as a lead singer was in 2013 with "Show Me", also a collaboration with Chris Brown.

Inbetween, at #27 we have Omi's "Cheerleader" advancing 15 places, while Meghan Trainor's follow-up to "All About That Bass" enters the top 50 at #29, up from #53. Expect "Lips Are Movin'" to enter the top 20 soon.

At #39 Sam Smith's "I'm Not The Only One" rebounds eleven, while Ariana Grande and The Weeknd continue their rise with "Love Me Harder", up four to #41.

Also new inside the top 50 we have Deichkind's latest offering. "Denken Sie Gross" debuts at #47. Not so long "So’ne Musik" peaked at #27.

The Album Chart

In the LP chart the new album of German rapper Prinz Porno debuts straight at #1 as his previous effort did back in 2013. Also new inside the top ten we can find Olli Schulz' "Feelings Aus Der Asche" at #4 - the first top ten album of the Joko and Klaas' sidekick; Callejon's "Wir Sind Angst" at #5 - the third consecutive top ten album of the metalcore band; and B-Tight's "Retro" at #8 - the second top ten album of the German rapper.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 16.01

Finally some movement atop the German singles chart as David Guetta's "Dangerous" gives up the number one position after being there for seven non-consecutive weeks. It's up to British singer and newcomer Kwabs and his amazing "Walk" to rise up one and claim the throne. Curiously, the song flopped at #71 in his home country. While David Guetta falls to #3, we have a new entry straight in at #2 coming from Clean Bandit and their latest collaboration with Jess Glynne called "Real Love". Their previous one "Rather Be" reached #1 in the course of the last year but was followed by a misfire by Clean Bandit and "Come over" (peak #76), while Jess Glynne had a brief success with "Right here", which peaked at #25.

At #6 Calvin Harris scores his third consecutive top ten single in Germany as "Outside" rises five. His previous collaboration with Ellie Goulding "I Need Your Love" reached #12.

There's also a new peak from Echosmith's "Cool Kids", which manages to improve on its entry at #9 two weeks ago by rising now to #8 from #12.

It's up four to #12 for "Blank Space" and Taylor Swift and up one to #13 for Mark Forster and "Flash mich".

At #14 Mark Ronson registers his second top 20 hit with "Uptown Funk!", up seven. The song marks also the tenth time of Bruno Mars having his name appearing inside the top 20.

Avicii's "The Night" continues its ascent and is now at #29, up five, while the second highest new entry belongs to Kanye West and his unusual collaboration with one Paul McCartney. Kanye has been absent from the charts since "Niggas in Paris" peaked at #40 in 2011, while Sir Paul was last in the German singles chart in 2005 with "Fine Line". "Only One" debuts this week at #32.

Following AaronChupa and Martin Tungevaag, Norway's next DJ export is ready to conquer the German chart. He comes under the name of Kygo and "Firestone", which soars to #33 from #84. The song, with added vocals by Conrad, has already topped the Norway's chart and has been a top ten hit in Sweden.

The last time Sasha, who had a brief success all over continental Europe with "If You Believe" in 1998, was in the top 40 was in 2009. Now his comeback single "Good Days" rises 19 places to peak at #38.
Video

The next Europe-wide hit to start conquering Germany comes from Jamaican singer Omi, whose "Cheerleader" has been remixed by German DJ Felix Jaehn and has already been a solid hit in Sweden and Denmark. In its second week on the German top 100 the song climbs from #69 to #42.

Up fifteen to #45 is Ariana Grande's collaboration with The Weeknd called "Love Me Harder". It is the third single of Grande in the top 50 as a lead artist.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 9.01

With the start of the new year, no one is able to challenge the supremacy of David Guetta's "Dangerous" as the song spends its sixth week at #1. Kwabs' "Walk" sticks to #2, while Jennifer Lawrence-sung "The Hanging Tree" is still at #3, proving to be more than just a brief soundtrack highlight.

Dance track "I'm An Albatraoz" of AronChupa registers a new peak by moving up three to #4, while Calvin Harris' "Outside" is approaching slowly the top ten as it rises four to #11.

"Blank Space" of Taylor Swift is also on the rise as it advances four to #16 to hopefully join the top ten in the weeks to come. Also up four is "Back Home" of Fritz Kalkbrenner, this time at #18, while the first real monstrous hit of 2015 - "Uptown Funk" of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars soars 15 positions to #21.

The Album Chart

In the Album Chart Helene Fischer's megasuccess "Farbenspiel" returns to the summit, rising from #2. As many of you already know, the album crowned the year-end LP chart for 2014 after doing so for 2013 when it was actually released. It is also the home of single "Atemlos durch die Nacht", which despite never reaching #1 in the Top 100 ranked at the first position in the year-end Singles chart for 2014. And by the look of it, Helene Fischer starts the new year great as well.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 26.12

After returning to the top spot last week, "Dangerous" of David Guetta and Sam Martin stays there for a fourth non-consecutive time. Its sales were boosted by the appearance of Guetta on the finale of The Voice of Germany two weeks ago. As a whole, this week's countdown is influenced by the show as at #2, up from #23, Germans have finally found out about "Take Me To Church" of Hozier despite the song being around for ages. As Hozier sang it during the finale together with winner Charley Ann Schmutzler, the song easily improves on the #20 peak achieved before. Speaking of the winner and her finale song "Blue Heart", it rises from #29 to #3. Still don't expect anyone to remember Charley Ann in two months.

Ed Sheeran scores his third top ten hit in Germany also thanks to The Voice of Germany where he performed "Thinking Out Loud", which now rises six to #6.

German rock band Frei.wild has had chart appearances since 2010 but they have never charted higher than #19, an injustice now undone as their newest single "Wir brechen eure Seelen" debuts straight at #9.
Video

"Au Revoir" of Mark Forster is definitely one of the hits of the year in Germany and it's great to see the singer's next single also performing well as "Flash mich" rises 16 to #14.
Video

The next new entries belong to two relative newcomers on the German music scene. At #18 Joel Brandenstein has managed to bring his debut single "Diese Liebe" inside the top 20 after a successful Internet campaign started by himself. At #20 Nico Suave, helped by one Xavier Naidoo, scores his first ever hit, after two minor chart entries at the lower end of the Top 100, with "Danke".

At #22 Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" moves up from #38, while soaring from #95 to #34 is the version of "Hallelujah" of the aforementioned Xavier Naidoo. It was performed at the Christmas show of local music competition "Sing meinen Song".
Video - Taylor Swift

"Uptown Funk", the collaboration of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, is slowly conquering the world as in Germany it goes up two to #43. At the same time Avicii's follow-up to top-ten hit "The Days" called "The Nights" enters the top 50 at #47, an increase from #59.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 12.12

Though the English version of the 2014 take of  "Do They Know It's Christmas" leaves the top ten by plunging nine to #12, the German one (which at least tries to be different) sticks to number one for a second week in a row. Up five to #2 is the Jennifer Lawrence-sung track "The Hanging Tree" from the soundtrack of Mockingjay: Part One - a spectacular and rather unexpected success. The top three is completed by David Guetta and his racing anthem "Dangerous".

AronChupa's "I'm an Albatraoz" advances one to #7, while the highest new entry belongs to Jessie J and her "Masterpiece" at #10. The song is the second single taken from Jessie's "Sweet Talker" album and arrives after "Bang Bang" peaked at #13 recently. Jessie sang "Masterpiece" together with contestants from the Voice Of Germany at the end of November, which can explain why the song has become the singer's second top ten single in the country, next to "Price Tag" (peak #3).

"Diamonds" of Josef Salvat moves up seven to #11, while "Thinking Out Loud" of Ed Sheeran rises eleven to #13 and turns into the singer's fifth top 20 single in Germany. It even manages to improve on the #17 peak of previous release "Don't".

Further down the top 50, George Ezra moves up to #27 from #42 with "Blame It On Me".

As every year, the influx of Christmas hits come holiday time is led by Wham!'s evergreen "Last Christmas", which shoots itself to #31 from #72, while Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is close behind, at #36, up from #79.

"Au Revior" is one of the definite hits of 2014 and Mark Forster is now ready with the follow-up "Flash mich", which enters the top 50 by moving up 21 to #34.

It's up two to #38 for Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat" in its second week on the chart. "Blank Space", the second single taken out of Taylor Swift's "1989" album, is gaining momentum as the song advance 20 to #40 being the sixth single of the star in the chart. First offering "Shake It Off" peaked at #5 and is still sticking around.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 5.12

Following a several-week hiatus the comments are back with an extremely interesting countdown this week. After David Guetta spent two weeks as number one with "Dangerous", as expected the biggest arrival of the week belongs to Band Aid 30. However, for a change this time we have a German version of the famous song, sung by a bunch of the hottest stars of German music currently. It is thus only the second version of " Do They Know It's Christmas" to reach number one in Germany, next to the original back in 1984. The 1989 version flopped at #74, while the 2004 one peaked at #7. Curiously the so-called local TV Allstars project brought a version of the hit to #3 in 2003, while last week the official line-up of Band Aid 30 debuted at #2 with the current English version of the single. The latter is this week down to #3.

It's extremely rare to see an actor appearing in the charts, let alone in the upper reaches, with a song performed during a movie, but the impact of Jennifer Lawrence singing "The Hanging Tree" in the latest Hunger Games installment was so huge that thanks also to the effect of Internet where now everything can be downloaded, the soundtrack item (written by famous film composer James Newton Howard) debuts at #7. We should not be surprised as after all the song was a stand-up moment of an overall unspectacular film.

Audio

The domination of Swedish artist Aron Michael Ekberg, or AronChupa, over the German chart continues as dance anthem "I'm An Albatraoz" grows two to #8. The vocals are actually provided by Aron's sister.

Video

Further down the top 20, "Wrapped Up", the first single of Olly Murs' newest album, moves up one to #12 in its third week on the chart. It's the fourth top 20 single of the UK star.

Video

Thanks to a great winter track, excellent performance by lead vocalist Samu and last but definitely not least because of the singer's star status in Germany (due to his coach duties in The Voice Of Germany), Sunrise Avenue had their fourth top 20 single in the country with "Nothing Is Over" arriving at #16. It is the second new song taken from Sunrise Avenue's "Best Of" collection, while first one "You Can Never Be Ready" finds inner strength this week and shoots itself to a brand new peak position at #30, up from #57.

The quest of Josef Salvat to conquer the global charts continues as his take on "Diamonds" rises from #42 to enter the top 20 at #18. Also new inside the first 20 after a long climb is "Habits (Stay High)", the break-up anthem of Tove Love, which moves up four to #20.
Josef Salvat - Live
Video - Tove Lo

Up one, and slowly turning into another hit of Ed Sheeran in Germany, is his third "X" single "Thinking Out Loud". It is at #24.
Video

Nothing stands on the way of David Guetta as the release of his new album "Listen" has triggered the interest in several of the non-single tracks in it. The biggest of them is "Hey Mama", a team-up with Nicki Minaj and Afrojack, which enters new at #28.
Audio

Although we can expect a quick downfall, Farin Urlaub and his Racing Team bring another top 40 singe with "AWG" debuting at #32. It is the second single from the "Faszination Weltraum" album, with first one "Herz? Verloren" reaching #12, and also the tenth "solo" top 40 single of Urlaub.
Video

The arrival of Jennifer Lawrence's "Hanging Tree" hasn't prevented the official "Hunger Games" track of Lorde to enter the countdown as it can be found at #40. "Yellow Flicker Beat" is thus the third top 40 single of the New Zealand singer.
Video

The success of AC/DC in their singles era continues as the second official release from the band's new album enters at #49. "Rock or Bust" comes after "Play Ball" reached #39.

The other new entries:

58. Sasha - Good Days

75. David Guetta ft. Emeli Sandé - What I Did For Love
78. Adel Tawil - Kartenhaus

81. Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk!

93. David Guetta ft. The Script - Goodbye Friend
94. David Guetta & Showtek ft. Elliphant & Ms. Dynamite - No Money No Love

The Album Chart

When it comes to the biggest stars in Germany's albums market, no one can claim the dominant position of one Herbert Groenemeyer as his string of number one albums continues unharmed since his release of "4630 Bochum" in 1984. "Dauernd Jetzt" is the tenth consecutive studio album of the German star to reach the summit and comes three years after "Schiffsverkehr". Only three studio albums of David Guetta have entered the German chart, with the latest "Listen" entering at #3. His previous one "Nothing but the Beat" peaked at #1.
