German Chart Comments - Issue Date 17.01

Following a three-week stay as #1, Pitbull and Kesha retreat this week to #2, leading the way to (man of the moment) Pharrell Williams and his "Happy" to crown the German charts by moving up eight positions. Of course Pharrell was at #1 before but as a guest appearance on Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky".

Though I expected "I See Fire", the "Hobbit" song of Ed Sheeran, to go away quickly, I am proved wrong this week as the title advances seven notches and enters the top three at #3. It thus beats by a mile the #9 peak of Ed's biggest hit so far - "The A-Team". And it is always good to see soundtrack hits so high in the charts as it was customary in the past.

Within the top 20 we have new peak positions achieved by club anthem "Tsunami" of DVBBS & Borgeous at #14, up from #16, and by Imagine Dragons and their "Demons" at #19, up from #15.

At #22 and #24 can be found two singles, which have rebounded their chart development and manage to score new peak positions. The songs in question are "Story Of My Life" by One Direction, which rises from #31 to #22, and Calvin Harris' "Under Control", up from #36 to #24.

Also moving in the right direction and on the way to score a third hit in Germany are Bastille, whose "Of The Night" climbs 26 places to #26. Bastille's "Pompeii" reached #6 last year, while "Things We Lost in the Fire" peaked at #18. Their latest single is based on 1990s hits "The Rhythm of the Night" by Corona (peak #8) and Snap's number one smash "Rhythm is a Dancer".

The highest new entry this week comes in at #32 from local rapper Farid Bang. "Bitte Spitte Toi Lab" is the first single taken from Farid's latest album "Killa" and its position is by four places lower than the musician's biggest hit so far - "Dynamit" from 2012.

"Show Me", the hit of Kid Ink and Chris Brown, has also changed its chart prospects this week as it moves up from #48 to #36.

After a slow start, "Ich Lass Für Dich Das Licht An", the second single from Revolverheld's "Immer in Bewegung" LP soars in its third week from #90 to #38. Whether it will reach the heights of previous hit "Das kann uns keiner nehmen" (peak #10) is doubtful but at least it's gonna have a respectable peak position.

Rebecca Ferguson has had three briefly charting singles in Germany so far, with none of them reaching the top 50. However, the situation now changes as "Light On", the first track from Rebecca's "Freedom" album to be released in Germany, enters at #40. The song's popularity is also due to the fact that it is used as part of the campaign marking the 30-year anniversary of TV channel RTL.

Also on the rise this week we have Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' fourth official release in the country called "White Walls", which is at #41, up from its debut at #78 seven days ago. In addition, Sido's "Liebe" can be found at #43, a rise from #86.

The Album Chart 
 
The entire top three in the album chart remains unchanged with Helene Fischer's "Farbenspiel" continuing to sell well in the new year, followed by the Max Herre's "MTV Unplugged" and Robbie Williams' "Swings Both Ways". The only new entry inside the top ten belongs to US heavy metal band Iced Earth at #5. Thus "Plagues Of Babylon" becomes the group's most successful release in Germany.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 10.01

Despite that the 2013 year-end charts may at the moment seem more interesting (hopefully VIVA will upload them on its website soon), the new regular German countdown deserves attention as it marks the first time paid music streaming is reflected in the listing. Whether it will have any considerable impact and whether it will be of any good, perhaps the next weeks will show. 

The new rule, however, does not stop Pitbull and Kesha staying for a third week on top with "Timber", followed by former #1 "Changes" of Faul & Wad Ad Vs. Pnau (up one to #2) and Adel Tawil's "Lieder" (up one to #3).

It already became obvious that "Atemlos Durch Die Nacht" has become the most successful single of Helene Fischer in the singles chart but the hit seems unstoppable as it moves this week five to claim a new peak at #5. Perhaps the schlager queen (sorry Andrea) is finding new and new fans as we speak.

At #9, and already turning into one of the early 2014 hits, we have "Happy" of Pharrell Williams, which rises thirteen positions to enter the top ten for the first time. Needless to say, this is Pharrell's biggest solo hit in Germany.

After surprisingly leaving the top 20 several weeks ago, "Tsunami" of Dvbbs & Borgeous returns there by climbing from #33 to #16.

Also on the rise is "Demons", the fourth single of Imagine Dragons, which moves to #19 from #28, making the string of top 20 hits of the Las Vegas band in Germany unharmed.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 3.01

Pitbull and Kesha spend comfortably a second week on the top of the German singles chart with "Timber". The biggest competition comes in the face of Andreas Kuemmert, the winner of last year's The Voice of Germany, whose "Simple Man" moves up two to #2. "Do You Like What You See", the debut single of Ivy Quainoo (the winner in 2011) also peaked at #2, while "Unbreakable" of Nick Howard reached #5 in 2012.

One of the biggest news this week is the #10 position of "Atemlos Durch Die Nacht" of Helene Fischer, which climbs four to enter the top ten for the first time. Boosted by several dance remixes, which even make the song playable inside clubs, the hit becomes easily the most successful song of Helene so far. And after demonstrating unbeatable power inside the LP chart, perhaps now the multi-talented artist will also conquer the singles ones?

Up eight to #22 in its second week, we have "Happy", current UK #1, of Pharrell Williams climbing its way towards the top 20. At #28, up from #38, "Demons" of Imagine Dragons has once again started rising, registering a new peak, this time inside the top 30.

In a quiet week for new entries, the highest one belongs to Duesseldorf band Broilers and its "Ist da jemand" at #32. The boys have had two singles inside the top 100 so far, with 2011's "Harter Weg" being the more successful, with a peak at #28. However, the two songs spent only a week inside the countdown.

And finally, also new at #43 is "Kopfvilla", the debut single of hip hop newcomer Sierra Kidd.

The Album Chart 

Another slow week in terms of new entries in the LP chart, which leads the way to "Farbenspiel" - the biggest selling album of 2013 belonging to Helene Fischer, to return to the top. Thus, Robbie Williams' "Swings Both Ways" is down to #2, while "Mtv Unplugged" of Max Herre is still #3. Beyonce's surprising new album arrives at #13 this week.

After a brief stay at #1 for just a week, "Changes" of Faul & Wad Ad & Pnau (I challenge you to remember the artists in two years) drops this time to #2, leaving the way for Pitbull to have his first number single in the country as a lead artist. The superstar  provided in the past vocals to Jennifer Lopez' number one smash "On The Floor" but "Timber" becomes his first proper chart topper in Germany. Kudos also to Kesha, whose participation on the song means that the singer has her second number one in the country after 2009's "Tik Tok".

The top three is rounded up by "Lieder" of Adel Tawil, while the highest new entry comes on behalf of this year's winner of The Voice of Germany. Andreas Kuemmert is the man who unsurprisingly ranked first in the casting show, with "Simple Man" being his winner song. And the single arrives this week fresh at #4. The show had produced two winners before Andreas - Ivy Quainoo, whose career started promisingly before no one noticed that she had a new album out several months ago, and Nick Howard, who I think no one remembers any more.

Inside the top 50 The Voice of Germany is also responsible for #12 where runner-up Chris Schummert has his "The Singer" entering the chart, while Judith Van Hel, which ranked third, is new at #20 with "Fucking Beautiful". The two come from team Samu of Sunrise Avenue fame.

Coinciding with the success of The Hobbit 2 in cinemas, Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire", which is featured in the movie's soundtrack, soars this week to #9 from #53. The song thus reaches the same peak as Sheeran's only hit in Germany - "The A Team". However, the latter enjoyed a relative longevity in the chart, which "I See Fire" would probably not see.

By the looks of it, though reaching a new peak at #22, "Unconditional" is going to be one of the minor hits of Katy Perry. This week sees also the return of "Dark Horse" in the chart at #32. The song, which appeared briefly before the release of Perry's latest album, will be now officially promoted as a third single taken out of it.

After "Can’t Believe It" reached #4 earlier this year, Flo Rida starts slowly with his follow-up offering called "How I Feel". The song enters this week at #24 to be Rida's 12th top 30 single as a lead artist.

Pharrell Williams is definitely among the stars of the year as he provided vocals to two of 2013 biggest tracks "Get Lucky" of Daft Punk and "Blurred Lines" of Robin Thicke. Now, it is time for the man to rekindle his own solo career, which results in "Happy" entering at #30. Easily the song becomes his biggest solo outing in the country, beating the #37 of 2005's "Can I Have It Like That".

As his protege in The Voice of Germany won the show, Max Herre is also enjoying a minor chart success with the MTV Unplugged version of "A-N-N-A (Immer Wenn Es Regnet)" rising to #43 from #51.

And last, we have a new single of Frei.Wild entering as it is the tradition lately in the lower part of the top 50. "Stille Nacht" is thus at #45.

The Album Chart

In another slow week in the album chart Robbie Williams' "Swings Both Ways" is still at #1, cementing its status as one of the biggest releases this year. "Farbenspiel" of Helene Fischer is still at #2, while Max Herre brings his first MTV Unplugged at #3. The ex-Freundeskreis singer has scored two number one solo albums so far.

Following the somewhat unexpected success of Klingande and "Jubel", another French project, this time called Faul & Wad Ad (vs. Pnau) makes it to the top of the German charts with the similarly sounding "Changes". The song rises four to replace the aforementioned "Jubel" after spending seven non-consecutive weeks as #1.

At #2, up from #3, Pitbull and Kesha advance one to a new peak with "Timber", while Avicii's "Hey Brother" returns to the top three, an increase from #4.

The highest new entry belongs to local rapper Marteria, who a year ago had a number one smash with "Lila Wolken". "Kids (2 Finger an den Kopf)" debuts at #7 and becomes the second single of Marteria to enter the German top ten. He was last in the top 100 with "Big Bang", which reached #40 several months ago.

At #16, up from #24, Tim Bendzko has his fourth top 20 single with "Unter die Haut", which is taken from a new version of his second album. The song is a collaboration with Cassandra Steen, who has been absent from the countdown since "Tanz" reached #28 in 2011.

Imagine Dragons, one of the main discoveries of 2013, are on their way to have a fourth hit single in Germany as "Demons" shoots itself to #32 from #58. The group's previous records - "It's Time", "Radioactive" and "On Top of the World" reached #20, #4 and #13, respectively.

It's a seventh week for Klingande and "Jubel" on the summit of the German singles chart. Next at two, up from #3, Adel Tawil's "Lieder" returns once again to its peak position, while Pitbull and Kesha are yelling "Timber" at #3, up from #4. The latter is the second top three single of Pitbull as a lead singer in Germany, next to "Give Me Everything".

In its third week on the countdown, Faul & Wad Ad Vs Pnau rise five to #5 with "Changes", while at #13 Helene Fischer has her best performing single ever with "Atemlos durch die Nacht". By rising from #31, the second single from Helene's multi-selling album "Farbenspiel" improves considerably on the #20 peak of previous one "Fehlerfrei".

In the steps of Martin Garrix' "Animals", Canadian electronic music duo Dvbbs and US DJ Borgeous are rising high in the German chart as "Tsunami" moves from #26 to #18.

The highest new entry belongs to Sean Paul and "Turn It Up", as the second single from Paul's "Full Frequency" album enters at #21. It is, however, far from the #3 peak of pilot single "The Other Side Of Love".

At #23, up from #27, Katy Perry is advancing rather slowly towards the top 20 with "Unconditionally". Up one in its second week to #24 is also "Unter die Haut" of Tim Bendzko and Cassandra Steen.

Further down the list, with the approaching of Christmas, the usual bunch of holiday hits is finding its way towards the upper reaches of the countdown. Once again Wham!'s "Last Christmas" leads, as the song soars this week to #32 from #70. Melanie Thornton's "Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming)" is up to #38 from #80, while Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is at #50, an increase from #88.

Bad news this week for Britney Spears, whose latest album "Britney Jean" flops disastrously at #20 in the German LP chart and easily becomes the first album of the (former) superstar to miss the top 10. At #1 Sido has his second number one album with "30-11-80", while the latest from Nightwish appears at #6. It's called "Showtime, Storytime". Also new inside the top ten is Scorpions' "MTV Unplugged" at #9.
